Infusion Nurse

Overview

Under general supervision, provides professional nursing care for patients adhering to national and company standards and guidelines for specialty regulations. Demonstrates knowledge of physiological, psychological, and developmental and age‑specific differences in the patient population including late adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and the elderly. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to provide assessment and therapeutic management of patient/family needs. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, implement, coordinate, evaluate and promote continuity of care consistent with established standards and practices.
  • Assess health status by interviewing patient regarding current status and medical history; collect and record nursing assessment and interventions.
  • Review and report results of health status assessment, physical examination, pertinent laboratory data, radiographic data and psychosocial assessment of assigned patients to the provider.
  • Assess patient/family needs and provide teaching and instructional material.
  • Provide psychosocial support to patients and families; maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Prepare and administer therapies under the direction and supervision of a physician.
  • Administer all medications/blood products using correct dosage, route, time and technique; ensure pre‑authorization and consent forms when applicable.
  • Facilitate dose modification by assessing patient, labs, consulting protocol or treatment plan, calculating dose, and consulting physician regarding dosage modifications, problems and symptom management.
  • Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports and maintain central line catheter devices; maintain accurate documentation of patient care and treatments.
  • Apply knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture; restock supply area as needed.
  • Follow OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste and any other material potentially infected with a blood‑borne pathogen; maintain disinfection protocols and equipment quality‑control standards.
  • Facilitate clinical operations and patient care; manage patient medication refill requests; assist physician with exams and procedures; maintain efficient patient flow, schedule consultations, pre‑testing, diagnostic tests, referrals and future appointments.
  • Triage patient phone calls and facilitate communication between patient/family and interdisciplinary team.
  • Assist patients in locating available community resources; other duties as assigned.
  • Assist and collaborate with clinical research; act as a resource to LPN/LVNs and medical assistants.
  • Provide nursing coverage for satellite offices as needed; participate in professional development; maintain current knowledge of oncology nursing.
Specialty‑Specific Responsibilities (Transplant, Infusion)
  • Provide nursing care from initial patient contact through high‑dose chemotherapy and stem‑cell rescue to follow‑up care post‑stem‑cell rescue.
  • Manage symptoms/toxicities/health abnormalities related to intense high‑dose therapy and stem‑cell rescue.
  • Report data to relevant registries; incorporate transplant network recommendations into practice.
  • Program portable infusion pumps; instruct patient/caregiver on pump use at home; demonstrate pump cleaning and proper documentation.
Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited professional nursing program; BSN preferred.
  • RN state license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing in the practicing state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; maintain continuing education requirements.
  • 0–3 years nursing experience, preferably at least one year in oncology.
Work Environment &

Physical Requirements

Work environment includes exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations and other conditions common to an oncology/hematology clinic. Physical demands include handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, standing and walking for extensive periods, occasional lifting of up to 40 lbs.
