We’re looking for an Estimator to support our Minnesota Paint business. This position is responsible for developing accurate, competitive, and complete estimates for commercial painting and coatings projects.

This isn’t just a takeoff role. The Estimator will evaluate opportunities from the initial bid invitation through final pricing and, when a project is awarded, work with Operations to make sure the project starts with a clear understanding of the scope, costs, assumptions, exclusions, and potential risks.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Review plans, site visits to get measurements & quantities, take pictures, specifications, schedules, bid invitations, and project requirements.
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for painting, coatings, surface preparation, and related scopes.
  • Develop labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and indirect project costs.
  • Build competitive estimates that support project profitability.
Own Bid Quality
  • Identify scope gaps, risks, exclusions, and clarification needs before proposals are released.
  • Document assumptions and alternates clearly.
  • Review estimates for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with bid requirements.
  • Ensure bids are complete and delivered on time.

Develop clear scopes for subcontractor and vendor pricing.
  • Request and evaluate quotes.
  • Compare pricing on a consistent scope.
  • Resolve missing coverage or pricing discrepancies before finalizing an estimate.
Partner With Operations
  • Provide an organized handoff when projects are awarded.
  • Communicate scope, pricing, assumptions, exclusions, and identified project risks.
  • Provide the documentation Operations needs to successfully take the project from estimate to execution.
Keep Improving
  • Partner with Sales and Operations to evaluate estimating results.
  • Participate in win/loss reviews and use feedback to improve future estimates.
  • Look for opportunities to improve estimating accuracy, consistency, responsiveness, and follow-through.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
  • Produce complete and accurate estimates.
  • Document site visit with photos
  • Submit bids on time.
  • Maintain appropriate subcontractor and vendor coverage.
  • Identify scope gaps and risks before proposals are released.
  • Build competitive estimates that support healthy project margins.
  • Provide Operations with complete, organized award handoffs.
  • Learn from bid results and continuously improve estimating practices.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
  • 3-5 years of commercial construction estimating experience; commercial painting or coatings experience is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Experience performing quantity takeoffs and building detailed project estimates.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Solid analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with internal teams, vendors, subcontractors, and customers.
  • A collaborative mindset and strong sense of ownership and follow-through.
WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

A great estimate sets the foundation for a great project. In this position, you’ll help Minnesota Paint pursue the right opportunities, understand project risk before work begins, price work competitively, and give our Operations team the information they need to execute successfully.
