Critical Environment Engineer at QTS Data Centers

The Critical Environment Engineer will be responsible for engineering coordination, installation, and integration of electrical and mechanical systems, operating and maintaining both critical and non‑critical equipment across the QTS portfolio. The role requires strong planning skills, proactive partnership, and the ability to influence and lead through collaboration. Ideal candidates have experience in electrical and mechanical systems and knowledge of large‑scale data centers or similar environments, including state‑of‑the‑art electrical distribution, static UPS, emergency standby generation, fire alarm/suppression, monitoring systems, and large‑scale cooling.

This role requires work hours to support a 7×24×365 data center environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide technical support to all aspects of data center operations including the operation, maintenance and repair of all mission critical equipment and systems to achieve 100% uptime and compliance with all SLAs.
  • Assist in all site construction activity and installations, coordinating with QTS Development Team and external resources to ensure system design, installation and testing adhere to operational standards.
  • Validate commissioning tests and ensure receipt of all operational documentation.
  • Provide technical support for all local customer installations, coordinating with stakeholders for customer move‑ins, turn‑ups, deployments and power circuit installations.
  • Provide ongoing assessment of infrastructure and operations as required by QTS policies.
  • Support implementation and audit of local standard operating procedures.
  • Support accreditation, certification and compliance initiatives as required.
  • Maintain compliance with local health & safety standards (e.g., OSHA) and national electrical and building codes.
  • Interface with vendors, QTS Engineering, QTS Development and peer operations organizations.
  • Ensure adherence to all SOP, MOP, EOP and formal change control processes for critical environments.
  • Assist in the technical review and input on plans for all significant planned and emergency maintenance events.
  • Assist in the Change Management Process to approve preventative and corrective maintenance in accordance with established QTS processes.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree or professional equivalent.
  • Five or more years of direct experience with engineering activities in a technical or critical environment (data center, nuclear power, hospital, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, industrial/commercial field engineering).
  • HVAC or critical power certifications or equivalent professional experience.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% to other Data Center locations as required.
  • U.S. citizenship required by law due to federal customer contracts.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seven or more years of direct experience with facilities engineering in a data center environment.
KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to develop solutions and create technical plans on projects.
  • Willingness to think creatively to improve quality, reliability and reduce operating costs.
  • Advanced understanding of mechanical and electrical equipment, systems, and design related to data centers.
  • Knowledge of medium to low voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience with emergency backup systems (generators, UPS, battery backup).
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance and work order software systems, single line drawings, critical scripted work, and sequence of operations.
