Overview

Under the general direction of the Street Supervisor, the Street Maintenance Crew Lead performs and leads skilled duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of city streets, sidewalks, curbs, and traffic control in the public right‑of‑way. The role coordinates day‑to‑day field operations, trains crew members, ensures job site safety and efficiency, and provides technical direction and leadership to maintenance crews.

Supervision

Received: The Crew Lead receives general supervision from the Street Supervisor.

Exercised: The Crew Lead directs and leads the daily work of assigned street maintenance crew members, provides training, guidance, and on‑site supervision, and acts as supervisor in the absence of the Street Supervisor.

Essential Functions

The Crew Lead supervises, coordinates, and executes street maintenance operations, ensuring all tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with city standards, regulations, and project specifications. The role combines skilled labor with leadership duties, requiring technical expertise and the ability to manage personnel and project timelines.

The Crew Lead plans and assigns tasks, conducts daily briefings, ensures proper allocation of labor and equipment, monitors progress and quality, and makes real‑time decisions to adapt to job site challenges such as weather delays, subsurface conditions, or equipment malfunctions.

In the field, the Crew Lead oversees activities related to asphalt paving, concrete placement, and traffic control systems, including hot mix asphalt repairs, overlays, pothole patching, road widening, and full street reconstruction. Duties also include operating or directing paving machines, rollers, dump trucks, and other heavy machinery.

The Crew Lead manages installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic control devices, applying paint for lane striping, crosswalks, and curb markings, and ensuring compliance with MUTCD standards. Responsibilities include supervising temporary traffic control setups, basic traffic signal maintenance, and inspecting signal heads and pedestrian push buttons.

Additional duties include pre‑ and post‑operation inspections, minor vehicle maintenance, logging equipment usage, documenting completed work, and assisting with scheduling or planning future maintenance needs. The Crew Lead is on‑call during emergencies and responds to incidents such as snow, hazards, and flooding.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High‑school graduation required; plus one (1) year of vocational or technical training in street maintenance, construction, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of increasing responsibility in street maintenance or construction, including leadership or lead‑worker roles.
  • Three (3) years of snow removal experience, including one (1) year minimum with Eagle Mountain City.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The Crew Lead must possess thorough knowledge of public works construction techniques, MUTCD standards, and safe operation of light and heavy equipment. The role requires strong leadership, communication, and the ability to read blueprints and work orders. Physical fitness for all weather conditions, ability to perform basic math, and record‑keeping are essential. Commitment to teamwork, safety, and quality workmanship is required.

Work Environment

The job requires repeated physical activities such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing onto heavy equipment. Tasks may involve lifting up to 50 pounds. Work requires visual, auditory, and communicative skills; daily local travel and exposure to changing weather conditions are typical.

Salary

$27.06 – $29.02 per hour.
