Oversees and maintains, under the direction of the Marketing/Tourism Manager, the development, care and use of collections assigned to the museum, assuring proper handling of artifacts and information. Supervises volunteers. Initiates and participates in the writing of grant proposals and administers resulting projects. Contributes in both short and long-term planning for museum. Facilitates and conducts internal and external research.
Distinguishing Career FeaturesThe Museum Coordinator is a semi-professional position, responsible for the hours of operation of the museum and for the collection, display and preservation of museum pieces. The Coordinator requires competency in planning and developing strategies for generating funds, collection items, and other resources for the museum, including the writing of grant proposals. The Coordinator is an appointed position.
Requirements- Oversees and participates in daily collections management activities. Determines and implements methods for preservation and conservation of items which may include artifacts, minerals, art, photographs, samples, and/or documentary records.
- Receives and evaluates donations and acquisitions. Oversees inventorying, conserving, repacking, cataloging, transporting, and storing incoming items.
- Facilitates and encourages research submitted museum items. Conducts research in respective areas.
- Manages collections and working relationships with external agencies/groups, including consultation, inventory, conservation, preservation, and research.
- Participates in hiring, trains and/or oversees the work staff, students, and/or volunteers, as appropriate to the needs of the museum.
- Prepares budget proposals for projects and customer service. Monitors use of time, materials, and staff to remain within budget. Plans and develops strategies for generating funds and other resources for the department.
- Writes periodic reports for the museum. Writes repository agreements, deeds of gift, and programmatic agreements for agencies and private parties.
- Encourages and facilitates exhibitions, programs, and classes based on respective collections. May plan or assist in planning and coordinating exhibits, outreach programs, and public education events.
- Initiates and contributes to fundraising activities that include and are not limited to, auctions, entertainment, and special events.
- Performs inventorying, processing, repacking, cataloguing, transportation, storage, and preventive conservation of existing and new museum/gallery collections.
- Develops and maintains databases of collection items; compiles and verifies collection documents, to include both manual and computerized records and forms.
- Prepares collection materials for loan, research, and educational purposes, as required.
- Participates in the coordination of outreach programs and public relations events.
- Provides information and consultation to external constituencies and/or the general public on matters pertaining to artifacts and the collections.
- Performs archival research on collection materials and/or artifacts for inclusion in records and databases.
- Maintains the upkeep and cleanliness of the museum.
- Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
