Archaeological Field Technician (Southwest Borderlands)

Landhawk Consulting LLC is seeking several Archaeological Field Technicians to join our growing cultural resources and environmental team operating throughout southern New Mexico, far West Texas, and east Arizona. Established in 2012, Landhawk is a multidisciplinary environmental consulting firm of 25 professionals with expertise in natural resources, cultural resources, and water resource management.

Position Details and Expectations

The successful candidate will assist in archaeological field investigations, construction monitoring, and cultural resource surveys within the desert borderlands region. Work will focus on supporting environmental compliance for large-scale infrastructure and resource management projects in arid and semi-arid environments.

Candidates with some experience in the following are encouraged to apply:
  • Archaeological surveys, including hand-excavated shovel test pits and Class III pedestrian surveys.
  • Construction monitoring and compliance documentation for infrastructure or environmental projects.
  • Phase I, II, and III investigations for cultural resource identification, evaluation, and data recovery.
  • Preparing accurate and detailed field records, including daily and weekly monitoring summaries, survey forms, and archaeological site assessments.
  • Using or contributing to the New Mexico Cultural Resource Information System (NMCRIS).
  • Coordinating with the New Mexico and Arizona SHPOs and understanding federal frameworks such as Section 106 and ARPA.
Familiarity with the following is preferred:
  • Archaeological methods and principles relevant to the Desert Southwest, including Mogollon, Jornada, Hohokam, and Apachean cultural areas.
  • Artifact processing and documentation, including cleaning, labeling, cataloging, and curation preparation.
  • The archaeological and cultural history of southern New Mexico, far West Texas, and eastern Arizona.
  • Fieldwork as an archaeologist, surveyor, or environmental technician on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Technical specialties such as lithic analysis, ceramic classification, GIS-based site recording, or remote sensing applications.
Skills and Requirements:
  • Strong writing and communication skills for detailed field documentation and teamwork.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in field and remote settings.
  • Reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and a clean driving record.
  • Access to a computer and high-speed internet for remote data entry and reporting.
  • Flexibility to work extended field days (8–14 hours), overtime, and weekends as needed.
  • Comfort working outdoors in arid desert conditions, including exposure to heat, sun, wind, and rugged terrain.
  • Punctuality, reliability, and a strong work ethic are essential.
  • Familiarity with New Mexico, West Texas, and East Arizona archaeological practices and regulations.
Responsibilities:
  • Training will be provided for project-specific archaeological and environmental monitoring, protocol-level surveys, Geographic Information System (GIS) field data collection, reporting, and other specialized skills as needed.
  • Conducting archaeological field surveys, including hand-excavated shovel test pits, mechanical trench monitoring, and pedestrian transects.
  • Performing archaeological and construction monitoring to identify and document cultural resources.
  • Recording and photographing artifacts, features, and site conditions.
  • Maintaining detailed field notes and daily progress documentation.
  • Assisting with artifact processing, cataloging, and curation preparation.
  • Supporting report preparation through data organization and photo documentation.
  • Following safety protocols and field procedures to ensure compliance with project standards.
  • Working collaboratively with other environmental professionals and field technicians on multidisciplinary projects.
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Relevant field experience may be considered in lieu of a specific degree concentration where strong practical skills and regional familiarity are demonstrated.
