Job SummaryUnder the direction and supervision of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants treat patients through exercise, massage, gait and balance training, and other therapeutic interventions. They record patients' progress and report the results of each treatment to the physical therapist.
Job Description- The PTA is responsible for the treatment for residents who demonstrate disorders of musculoskeletal deficiencies, neurological conditions, balance disorders, and transfer/gait deficits. Treatment will only be conducted after a written order is received from the physician.
- Screening of residents:
- New Facility residents within 24 hours of admission.
- Long‑term residents upon receipt of a “Significant Change” form or referral from nursing.
- Completion of all necessary documentation, including Weekly Progress Notes, Monthly Recertification Forms, Discharge Summary, and other required forms.
- Attend all required facility meetings and in‑services (Medicare meetings, patient staffing, family meetings, care plans).
- Develop programs appropriate to the needs of the residents in cooperation with the Regional Manager.
- Assist the facility in meeting the standards necessary to obtain state, federal, and other appropriate certification.
- Employ and follow all appropriate facility infection control policies and procedures and respect OBRA Resident’s Rights Guidelines.
- Appropriate scheduling of residents on caseload in addition to all required in‑services and meetings.
- Consult with the Regional Manager if productivity levels consistently fall below or above the standard to indicate the need for additional staffing or assistance.
- Schedule and complete in‑services for facility staff education.
- Present herself/himself in a professional manner, including professional conduct, communication, and appropriate dress while in the facility.
- Other duties as assigned by the Regional Manager and facility.
The Physical Therapist Assistant will report directly to the Regional Manager, who is responsible for overseeing direct clinical skills, documentation skills, and compliance with all professional standards. The Physical Therapist Assistant will be indirectly supervised by an RPT, will carry out treatment plans established by the RPT, and will have all documentation signed by the RPT.
Physical DemandsThe Assistant is required to perform a variety of duties. Lifting: transfers of patients to and from beds, chairs, and commodes may require maximal assistance with patients weighing greater than 100 lbs. The assistant may also lift supplies up to 50 lbs to chest level and 10 lbs overhead. Push/Pull: the assistant is occasionally required to push or pull patients weighing up to 300 lbs in wheelchair distance up to 200 yards.
Work Environment: the assistant is required to work in a variety of environmental conditions.
- Must be able to read, write, and understand English language.
- Must attend a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education programs provided by the center to maintain certification.
- Completion of a 2‑year Physical Therapist Assistant Program and state licensure.
- Extensive knowledge of department processes.
- Knowledge of therapeutic technique.
