Acute Care Surgeon (MD/DO)
Must b e legally licensed to practice medicine in North Dakota and/or Minnesota, depending on the location of the practice to which they are assigned
Position SummaryThe Acute Care Surgeon provides comprehensive surgical care for patients with emergent and urgent surgical conditions. This role includes the evaluation and management of emergency general surgery cases, trauma care as applicable, and perioperative management of critically ill surgical patients, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary care team to deliver timely, high-quality, patient-centered care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Evaluate and manage patients with acute surgical conditions requiring urgent or emergent intervention
- Perform emergency general surgery procedures consistent with training and privileges
- Participate in trauma resuscitation and operative management as applicable
- Provide perioperative and postoperative care, including management of complications
- Manage critically ill surgical patients in collaboration with critical care teams
- Provide surgical consultation services throughout the hospital
- Participate in acute care surgery and emergency call coverage
- Collaborate with emergency medicine, anesthesia, critical care, radiology, and specialty surgical services
- Lead and participate in multidisciplinary rounds and care planning
- Supervise and educate residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and trainees as applicable
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
- Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and morbidity and mortality review activities
- Comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
- Completion of an accredited general surgery residency program
- Fellowship training in Acute Care Surgery, Trauma Surgery, or Surgical Critical Care preferred
- Board-eligible or board-certified in General Surgery
- Board certification or eligibility in Surgical Critical Care preferred
- Ability to obtain and maintain unrestricted state medical licensure
- DEA registration or eligibility
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification
- Expertise in emergency general surgery and acute surgical decision-making
- Strong operative and clinical judgment in high-acuity environments
- Ability to manage critically ill and injured patients
- Excellent leadership, communication, and teamwork skills
- Commitment to evidence-based practice, patient safety, and quality improvement
- Acute care hospital setting including operating rooms, emergency department, and inpatient units
- Call coverage including nights, weekends, and holidays as required
- Ability to stand for extended periods during surgical procedures
- Manual dexterity and physical stamina for operative cases
- Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for operative and emergency care environments
