Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS) – East Greenwich, Rhode Island is pleased to invite applications for our Emergency and Critical Care Residency Program, with upcoming openings beginning June 2026 and January 2027.

OSVS is a 24‑hour, referral and emergency hospital providing advanced veterinary care to patients across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Our facility houses a robust team of specialists representing multiple disciplines, including Internal Medicine (6), Surgery (3), Radiology, Oncology, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Neurology (2), Clinical Pathology, and Avian/Exotic Medicine, as well as three board‑certified Criticalists and more than 15 experienced, internship‑trained emergency clinicians.

We are a teaching‑oriented institution with long‑standing, well‑respected training programs, including residencies in Emergency and Critical Care and Surgery, as well as rotating and surgical internships. The OSVS culture emphasizes collegiality, mentorship, and excellence in clinical care.

Our 36,000‑square‑foot hospital includes a recently expanded Intensive Care Unit with dedicated gastrointestinal and respiratory isolation areas. The ICU is equipped with advanced life‑support and monitoring technologies, including hi‑flow oxygen systems, mechanical ventilators, telemetric ECG, defibrillators, pulse oximetry, and blood pressure monitoring.

Additional hospital resources include:

• Four fully equipped surgical suites for soft tissue, orthopedic, and laparoscopic procedures
• CT, MRI, fluoroscopy, digital radiography, and multiple ultrasound units
• Rigid and flexible endoscopy capabilities
• Comprehensive in‑house diagnostic laboratory (blood gas, electrolytes, CBC, chemistry, coagulation)
• Access to parenteral nutrition, peritoneal dialysis, and radioactive iodine therapy
• An active and well‑organized blood bank program

The three‑year residency is structured in accordance with ACVECC guidelines and provides an extensive and progressive experience in clinical emergency and critical care medicine. Residents spend approximately 60% of their time in emergency and critical care immersion under the direct supervision of OSVS Criticalists. During less supervised rotations, residents maintain close contact with Criticalists through weekly case reviews and topic‑based rounds focused on board preparation and advanced case discussion.

The remaining training time includes rotations through related disciplines such as Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology, Anesthesia, Surgery, and Radiology, ensuring a comprehensive and multidisciplinary educational experience.

Residents participate actively in daily case rounds, didactic sessions, and the instruction of interns, technicians, and visiting students. Opportunities for scholarly development include attendance at the International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium (IVECCS) during two years of the residency and participation in clinical rounds at local human hospitals.

Our residency is designed to produce well‑prepared, confident clinicians who are fully equipped for both board certification and successful specialty practice. Over the past seven years, OSVS residents have achieved a 100% publication completion rate and a 90% first‑attempt success rate on the ACVECC certifying examination.

Residents are directly supported by three board‑certified Criticalists and a large multidisciplinary specialty team. This provides continuous access to expert consultation and fosters an environment conducive to collaborative case management and professional growth.

Applicants must have completed a small animal rotating internship or possess significant experience as an emergency clinician in a hospital with specialty services.

Graduates of non‑AVMA‑accredited institutions must have fulfilled all requirements necessary to obtain licensure in the state of Rhode Island.
