An established and respected business within the custom build residential sector is seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead its in-house design team.
With decades of expertise in delivering high-quality, bespoke timber frame homes, this organisation specialises in efficient, sustainable construction and prides itself on technical excellence and customer-focused design.
This is an exciting opportunity for a talented design professional with proven leadership experience to play a key role in delivering outstanding residential projects from concept through to manufacture.
The RoleAs Design Manager, you will oversee the full design process for bespoke residential homes and small-scale developments, ensuring projects are delivered accurately, on time, and to the highest quality standards.
You will lead a small team of Designers and Technicians, working closely with Project Managers, Engineers, and internal manufacturing and construction teams to translate client visions into thoughtful, buildable solutions.
This is a full-time, office-based position in East Grinstead.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and manage a team of Designers and Technicians
- Oversee production of drawings from concept and planning through to Building Control and Technical Construction stages
- Manage team workload to ensure deadlines are achieved without compromising quality
- Collaborate with Project Managers and engage with clients to develop practical, well-considered designs
- Coordinate with internal manufacturing and construction departments
- Review and approve technical drawings for accuracy and regulatory compliance
- Support and mentor team members to encourage professional development
- Manage drawing storage, filing, and documentation control processes
- Proficiency in AutoCAD
- Working knowledge of Sketch Up, Enscape and Photoshop
- Proven experience managing and leading a design team
- Strong portfolio demonstrating creative and technical expertise
- In-depth knowledge of UK planning policy and building regulations
- Understanding of structural design principles, particularly timber frame construction
- Knowledge of CDM regulations and associated responsibilities
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
- Experience using AI and digital tools within architectural workflows
- Knowledge of sustainable design and energy-efficient construction practices
