Job Summary
Implementation of departmental goals by providing professional services, including clinical laboratory examinations, quality control, instrument maintenance, test management, supplies inventory, and other functions necessary to achieve section goals.
Essential Functions- Adheres to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
- Follows established quality control policies and documents corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
- Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and notifies supervisor or director.
- Performs laboratory procedures using manual and automated methods across Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines introduced into the laboratory.
- Performs and documents maintenance—daily, weekly, monthly—on instruments and equipment.
- Reviews accuracy of patient results prior to release or reporting.
- Recognizes age‑specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
- Ensures proficiency testing samples are processed in the same manner as patient samples and collaborates with other laboratories on proficiency testing results.
- May perform venipuncture or capillary puncture across age groups from newborn to geriatrics.
- Assists in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
- Adheres to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources policies.
- May serve as Lead Technician during supervisor absence, responsible for section or department during shift.
- May have responsibilities related to LIS and/or POCT.
- Explains procedures and lab tests to colleagues, newly hired staff, hospital personnel, students, or volunteers, considering language and educational level.
- Participates in required continuing education and CME activities to maintain licensure.
- Participates in staff meetings, quality improvement projects, and follows Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.

Minimum Education /CertificationsBaccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or equivalent preferred; associate degree acceptable if experience criteria are met (must meet NJ State Department of Health regulation for Technologist). ASCP or equivalent preferred. One year of full‑time experience required for associate degree; one year of clinical practicum or full‑time experience required for bachelor’s degree.
Minimum Work ExperienceMedical Technologist – 2+ years preferred. Previous experience in a hospital laboratory setting preferred; new graduates welcome.
Position Type/Expected Hours of WorkProfessional‑Clinical; varies based on status of PD, PT, FT.
Physical Demands AnalysisMust lift or carry objects up to 25 pounds; full range of body motion; manual and finger dexterity with eye‑hand coordination; standing, bending, walking for extensive periods; use of computer terminals and telephones; irregular hours (evenings, nights, weekends). 20–30% standing; 20–30% walking; 1–5% lifting; 1–5% bending; 1–5% pulling/pushing; 40–60% sitting. Vision must pass approved color‑blindness tests. Routine duties involve laboratory conditions;
exposure to vapors, fumes, moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, chemical and biological hazards, patient contact, needles/syringes, waste handling. Protective gear: face shields, gloves, fluid‑resistant coats.
