Position PurposeThe Veterinarian Technician provides excellent veterinary care to Vetco Total Care hospital patients and outstanding customer care to their owners. The Technician is a key member of the hospital team, representing the mission and values to clients and partners and helping foster cohesion and motivation within the hospital.
Essential Job Functions- Greet clients and patients, escort to exam rooms, obtain weight and vital signs, record in the electronic medical record, and begin documentation of the patient visit by obtaining a thorough patient history.
- Assist veterinarians with appointments (routine and emergency), surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia, under supervision as directed.
- Perform patient restraint, process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications, and maintain the electronic medical record.
- Schedule appointments, educate clients, relay test results, maintain inventory and client/patient records, and manage accounts receivable.
- Prepare patients for surgical/dental procedures, support induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients, monitor during recovery, and prepare for discharge or transfer as needed.
- Provide in-hospital treatments including injectable/oral medications and intravenous therapies; keep patients clean, hydrated, and fed as directed; walk canine patients for elimination when needed.
- Participate in training of new staff and dissemination of knowledge as required.
- Keep the hospital environment neat and clean and perform regular maintenance as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Provide backup phone and front desk support as needed.
In all care activities, the Veterinary Technician takes direction from the veterinarians and the Hospital Office Manager or Hospital Leader on Duty.

Supervisory ResponsibilityThis position has no immediate supervisory duties.
Education/Experience- College or college-equivalent education required to become a Credentialed Veterinary Technician in the state of practice.
- At least 1 year of prior experience as a Veterinary Technician or in a veterinary practice.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Compassionate, professional demeanor under emotional and stressful situations.
- Telephone and computer skills; must be a team player willing to learn and adapt.
Most duties are conducted in the Vetco Total Care hospital. Requires bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for long periods. Extensive client and pet interaction.
CompensationThe pay ranges reflect state-specific regulations; actual pay depends on position, location, experience, and applicable minimum wage laws. Salary Range: $20.50 - $33.00 per hour. For more details on Petco Total Rewards, including benefits, see
