Field/Service Technician
This position is responsible for specialized work related to metering operations, implementation of special projects within the metering division, and resolution of major issues on metered accounts. Under general supervision, responsible for managing capital budget and commercial and residential accounts related to the Meter Division.
- Facilitates implementation of capital projects;
- Facilitates the setup of major commercial/residential accounts;
- Performs high level investigations of high/low consumption issues on accounts;
- Assists with training of new and existing staff;
- Investigates theft of service issues as needed;
- Assists with water and electric cut-on and cut-off services as needed;
- Determines location of meters and places accounts in appropriate meter book;
- Keeps records and makes reports of meter reading activities when supervising staff;
- Monitors service orders and assists with completion of outstanding service orders when needed;
- Manages and handles customer complaints and requests;
- Monitors meters to detect broken or inaccurate meters;
- Conducts meter calibration process; reads meters when necessary;
- Assists with office duties as needed;
- Performs other related duties as required.
High School diploma or equivalent; related technical degree or Associate's degree preferred; five (5) to six (6) years of related experience; possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Knowledge of water and electric meter functions;
- Knowledge of electrical safety regulations;
- Knowledge of meter reading practices and procedures;
- Skill in operating a hand-held meter-reading unit;
- Knowledge of the City electrical, water and gas systems;
- Knowledge of the location of City streets and meters;
- Skill in oral and written communication;
- Skill in working with the general public;
- Ability to manage multiple projects;
- Ability to train and supervise the activities of meter reader staff;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City departmental staff and the general public;
- Ability to observe meter activity accurately and record readings legibly;
- Ability to perform mathematical computations rapidly and accurately;
- Ability to produce special reports as needed.
Employee works directly for the Meter Manager and is responsible for making decisions requiring the application of considerable knowledge of departmental rules and regulations, but may refer difficult policy or technical matters to an administrative supervisor for decision.
GuidelinesGuidelines include the National Electrical Code, City codes, policies and procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
ComplexityThis position consists of critical thinking and problem solving on issues related to meter operations. It requires the ability to manage, implement, and report on special projects and issues related to metering.
Scope and EffectThe purpose of this position is to execute duties and responsibilities within metering operations that require an extensive knowledge of metering equipment and operations. Successful performance helps ensure continued water and electric services and the timely resolution of account problems for customers.

Purpose of ContactsContacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.
Physical DemandsThe work is typically performed with the employee intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee is required to frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.
Work EnvironmentThe work is performed outdoors and in an office environment. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather.
Supervisory and Management ResponsibilityAssists Meter Lead with general supervision of meter reader staff as needed or required.
