Registered Nurse PD

Summary

Utilizing the nursing process, this role is responsible for providing acute and long‑term nursing care for patients, families, and staff in a psychiatric or pediatric setting. The RN is expected to role model Brown University Health’s values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence, while working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team.

• Provide direct nursing and patient care following the nursing process, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Initiate biopsychosocial assessments within 8 hours of admission and document findings in required medical record formats.
• Communicate significant assessment changes to nurse in charge and other health‑care providers.
• Develop and update patient care plans, including measurable short‑ and long‑term goals, nursing interventions, family involvement, and after‑care needs.
• Administer medications per protocol and evaluate effectiveness and side‑effects.
• Serve as patient advocate, supporting the Patient Bill of Rights and applicable mental‑health law.
• Provide education to patients/families and facilitate therapeutic alliance through documentation and supervision.
• Manage the therapeutic milieu, including safety, group dynamics, and staff interactions.
• Participate in emergency response and crisis management.
• Document and facilitate quality assurance data collection, program assessment, and therapeutic milieu development.
• Provide leadership on unit when assigned as nurse in charge and supervise behavioral‑health specialists and support staff.
• Assist in orientation of new employees and students and deliver impromptu instruction on therapeutic techniques and nursing procedures.
• Maintain professional growth through ongoing education, performance appraisal, and participation in staff meetings.

• Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island or licensure under the Nurse Licensure Compact.

• Graduate of a nursing program with current RN license in Rhode Island.
• Knowledge of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in patient care.

• Two years of psychiatric nursing and/or pediatric nursing preferred; experience will be reviewed by the manager for eligibility.

Psychology‑based clinical setting requiring extensive standing, walking, and occasional lifting of patients. Requires experience working with students with emotional and behavioral disorders and developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorders.
