SummaryThe Oncology Nurse is responsible for providing professional, safe, efficient, and high‑quality nursing care to patients within their designated oncology departments. The Oncology Nurse is a crucial part of a patient’s cancer care team, educating, coordinating, administering, and monitoring the treatment and services the patient receives. The Oncology Nurse utilizes effective communication and works collaboratively with other healthcare disciplines to assure safe delivery of oncologic patient care.
Job Duties- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for designated oncology patients, initiating collaboration with physicians or other interdisciplinary team members to proactively resolve patient needs.
- Use effective verbal and non‑verbal communication styles with patients, families, visitors, staff, and other professionals, serving as an advocate for patients.
- Provide written and verbal education to patients and families, translating complex medical terminology and treatment methodologies.
- Support and guide patients throughout diagnosis and treatment; refer patients and families to healthcare services and community resources; communicate with interdisciplinary team to prevent or minimize potential patient complications.
- Demonstrate commitment to quality and safety in accordance with established policies and procedures, utilizing evidence‑based practice.
- Participate in all phases of the performance improvement process, supporting department and hospital goals and objectives.
- Utilize technology to optimize communication and patient care delivery.
- Demonstrate commitment to colleagues and colleague experience, participating in team‑building activities, mentoring new staff, delegating appropriately, and providing input on performance appraisal of team members.
- Adhere to the LVHN confidentiality policy, consistently protecting patients’ PHI per HIPAA guidelines.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Knowledge and competence that reflects current nursing practice; ability to critically think and adapt to changing situations.
- Successful completion of orientation programs related to specialty.
- Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care delivery.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a team to care for patients.
- Effective communication skills with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Knowledge of word processing, electronic health records, and database software applications.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support – State of Pennsylvania upon hire.
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) / Oncology Certified Nursing (ONCC) within 3 years.
- Registered Nurse, licensed in PA upon hire.
- National Compact RN license (NLC Compact) upon hire.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
- 1 year of acute care and/or oncology nursing experience.
Lift and carry 40–50 lbs. Examples: push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of patient’s weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters may walk 8–10 miles per shift. Providers may be required to perform activities such as kneeling, bending, squatting, and performing CPR.
