Summary:

Malin Group have been pivotal in establishing the Maritime Supply Chain Innovation Centre (MSCIC) at the Scottish Marine Technology Park in West Dunbartonshire through the Glasgow City Region Investment Zone programme.

EngD seeks to rapidly explore automated robotic manufacturing approaches such as robotic welding and Wire+Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) of heavy steel components for the nuclear and maritime sector.

Project Aims and Objectives:
  • Assess feasibility of undertaking large-scale robotic manufacture of heavy steel components for the nuclear and maritime sector.
  • Understand key structural integrity, material supply, business drivers and safety aspects related to the manufacture of heavy steel components for the nuclear and maritime sector.
  • Explore the automated manufacture of heavy steel components for the nuclear and maritime sector.
  • Verify the performance of the final build using mechanical and non-destructive testing (NDT) approaches.
  • Optimise the automated build of these heavy steel components for the nuclear and maritime sector based on Objective 4.
  • Alignment to STAND-UP Target Impact Outcomes
    • 50% in overall build or decommissioning process time, through digital tools, automation, new processes, monitoring and control strategies
    • 40% in maintenance time, through new materials, robotics, smart sensors, inspection during service and digital data analytics
