We are seeking a Charge Nurse for a very busy ophthalmology Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). The Charge Registered Nurse provides direction and supervision to nursing staff while ensuring high-quality patient care. Key responsibilities include helping develop nursing policies and procedures, overseeing quality assurance, and supporting effective communication across the healthcare team. The Charge Nurse mentors and trains staff, manages scheduling to optimize patient flow, oversees inventory, and participates in quality improvement initiatives.
This role assumes leadership of the unit in the Nursing Director’s absence and reports directly to the Director of Nursing.
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative settings.
- Perform patient assessments, collect medical histories, and verify surgical consents and required documentation.
- Monitor patients during recovery, provide discharge education, and ensure smooth transitions of care.
- Direct, supervise, and evaluate nursing staff to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care services.
- Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining written nursing objectives, policies, and procedures.
- Conduct annual reviews of nursing policies and procedures to ensure alignment with regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Provide mentorship, orientation, and training to new and existing nursing staff.
- Manage staff scheduling to ensure adequate coverage and efficient patient flow.
- Participate in QA/QI initiatives to identify opportunities for process improvement and enhance patient outcomes.
- Contribute to the development and revision of quality-related policies and procedures.
- Support compliance efforts and readiness activities for accreditation surveys, including Joint Commission standards.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Current BLS and ACLS certification
- Ophthalmology experience a plus.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Experience in leadership or supervisory role within a healthcare setting.
- Strong knowledge in Nursing Principles, Practice and Procedures.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, delegate effectively, and problem solve under pressure.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Commitment to continuous quality improvement and patient safety.
- Experience with QA/QI programs and Joint Commission survey preparation preferred.
