Margaret

A. Cargill Philanthropies refers collectively to two grantmaking entities, Margaret

A. Cargill Foundation (MACF) and Anne Ray Foundation (ARF). The two foundations have separate, but overlapping boards and investment portfolios and share a common mission of providing meaningful assistance and support to society, the arts, and the environment.

Margaret

A. Cargill Foundation is a private foundation that was established upon Ms. Cargill’s death in August 2006. MACF’s assets are approximately $3.5 billion.

Anne Ray Foundation is a supporting organization that may make grants only to beneficiary organizations specifically named by Ms. Cargill. ARF’s assets are approximately $5 billion.

MACP’s well-developed Philosophy of Grantmaking emphasizes the values and guiding principles of Margaret

A. Cargill by: using education and innovation to achieve core purposes; empowering people to be self-sufficient; maintaining a low profile while meeting the needs of others; supporting programs with broad impact, socially redeeming values, and a life value; and relieving suffering during disasters. A core element of its philosophy is investing in long-term relationships with key grantee organizations to find solutions aligned with shared values, aiming for lasting community impact.

This is further outlined in the MACP 2025 Strategic Vision and Goals, organized into three key areas:

  • Demonstrating lasting community impact and learning with partners and from program strategies.
  • Developing and utilizing diverse talents and knowledge.
  • Having systems, processes, and practices that effectively support collective work.

MACP began its formal journey on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) by deepening learning, understanding core concepts, and developing intercultural competence. Recent crises have heightened awareness of systemic racism and inequity, accelerating MACP’s DEIJ efforts. In December 2021, MACP adopted a new Vision Statement to guide these efforts. DEIJ is a shared responsibility at MACP, with all staff engaged in this ongoing journey to enhance effectiveness and impact.
