Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Safety Specialist to serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in one or more of the following disciplines:
Heavy Civil Utility, Transmission & Substation, Overhead Electric, or Gas
. This role is designed for seasoned field leaders who have spent years executing complex, high‑risk work safely and are now ready to mentor and elevate the next generation of field and safety professionals. The Senior Safety Specialist acts as a critical bridge between field operations and the Safety Department, ensuring that practical field knowledge and strong safety systems work together to support safe production.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Field Leadership & Mentorship
  • Provide hands‑on coaching and mentorship to Safety Specialists, Junior Safety Specialists, and Quality Control staff with a strong emphasis on real‑world field application.
  • Support Superintendents and Foremen in planning and executing high‑risk activities such as excavation, shoring, confined space entry, live electrical work, and gas tie‑ins.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to field leadership to strengthen jobsite safety culture and decision‑making.
  • Lead and support Safety Stand Downs, field coaching sessions, and post‑incident learning reviews.
Technical Safety Expertise
  • Conduct advanced jobsite safety inspections focused on proactive hazard identification and corrective coaching.
  • Review, develop, and support Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and site‑specific safety plans.
  • Lead or assist in complex incident investigations using Human Performance (HP) principles to identify root causes.
  • Apply OSHA’s Hierarchy of Controls to recommend practical and effective risk mitigation solutions.
Program Support & Development
  • Collaborate with the Safety Director and Safety team on company‑wide safety initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to update SOPs, policies, and safety training programs.
  • Deliver specialized safety training such as Excavation Competent Person, Confined Space Entry, Lockout/Tagout, and related topics.
  • Participate in internal audits, readiness reviews, and support for high‑risk or client‑critical projects.
Competencies & Requirements
  • 7+ years of experience as a safety professional managing onsite safety programs and initiatives.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret leading and lagging indicators to proactively improve safety performance.
  • Proven ability to engage crews and collaborate with field leadership to implement site‑specific safety practices.
  • Demonstrated experience leading incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
  • Strong leadership presence with credibility in the field and the ability to influence safety culture positively.
  • 5+ years of prior field experience in heavy civil utility, gas, or electrical work; prior roles as Foreman or Superintendent are highly desirable.
  • In‑depth knowledge of OSHA 1926 Construction standards and client‑specific safety requirements.
  • Self‑starter with strong communication skills and a practical, solution‑oriented mindset.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly to project sites.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required;
    Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Education, or related field preferred.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, PUC, PHMSA, and applicable state safety regulations.
  • CUSP, CHST, or equivalent certifications preferred but not required.
  • OSHA 30‑hour Construction certification required (OSHA 500 or 510 preferred).
  • Environmental compliance knowledge (e.g., erosion and sediment control certification preferred).
  • Adult CPR and Standard First Aid certification.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in office, yard, and active construction environments.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl as needed.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Comfortable working in varied weather conditions and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in noisy environments and conduct group training sessions.
  • Required use of PPE including safety footwear, high‑visibility clothing, hard hat, eye and hearing protection.
