Personal Lines Underwriting Manager

Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage underwriting strategies and the team to pursue new opportunities that balance profit, quality, and risk.
  • Recruit, coach, develop, and retain staff to achieve individual and organizational goals.
  • Drive synergy, integration, and efficiency in workflow and systems.
  • Act as a referral underwriter, providing feedback and technical guidance to underwriters.
  • Promote the company’s products and services, networking within the insurance community to stay informed on market changes.
  • Participate in initiatives to develop and implement processes and policies.
  • Maintain effective business relationships with agents, internal, and external customers.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions follow guidelines and service standards.
  • Make high‑impact decisions that influence company results.
  • Interpret and execute policies and guidelines, including assigning and approving authority levels.
  • Apply knowledge to solve complex problems and analyze patterns from partial or conflicting data.
  • Consistently adhere to customer experience standards, responding promptly, building rapport, demonstrating empathy, and owning issue resolution.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Experience managing a team of insurance professionals.
  • Extensive knowledge of industry best practices, standards, and multi‑discipline underwriting concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, direct, and develop individuals.
  • Valid and unrestricted driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Strong negotiation and relationship‑building skills.
  • Proven multitasking and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Excellent time‑management skills and initiative.
  • Bachelor’s degree in insurance, finance, or equivalent experience.
  • Professional certifications such as CPCU, AU, or CIC are preferred.
  • Intermediate‑to‑advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Proficient use of core systems, office equipment, and software packages.
Compensation

The full hiring range for this role is $102,200 – $140,470 annually. Base pay may vary based on experience, credentials, role scope, and location.
