Scope of Job

The Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Clerkships is a keymember of the education leadership team. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Clerkships is responsible for leadingcurricular activities that reflect the vision, values and missionof the UTRGV SOM. The Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs,Clerkships collaborates closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs and the Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs,Pre-clerkships to structure the horizontal and vertical integration of the overall UME curriculum.

Together they work to promote student success by ensuring all medical students achieve the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become competent,compassionate physician leaders.

Description of Duties
  • Oversees the daily operations of the clinical clerkshipcurriculum, which includes liaising closely with administrative staff, faculty and leadership to ensure timely and cohesivedelivery of the curriculum.
  • Assists in the design, delivery and management of the UMEclinical clerkship curriculum in alignment with LCME standards andthe Central Curriculum Authority Committee of UTRGV SOM(CCAC).
  • Works closely with faculty and curriculum leadership toco-create, implement and assess curricular innovations.
  • Oversees all aspects related to the evaluation of the clinicalclerkship curriculum including student, faculty, resident and site evaluations in collaboration with the Office of Evaluation,Assessment and Quality Improvement.
  • Identifies, supports, supervises and evaluates Clerkship Directors and clinical educators participating in the clerkshipeducation.
  • Oversees and manages the clerkship budget.
  • Continuously appraises the efficacy of the clerkship curriculum in terms of attainment of competencies, appropriateness ofsequencing, adequacy of content, pedagogical methods, etc. in orderto promote meaningful curricular renewal.
  • Recommends and implements high-impact, evidence-informedcurricular changes to restructure components of the current curriculum and responds to concerns or suggestions from students,faculty and staff.
  • Partners with clerkship directors and clinical faculty to implement revisions and updates to clinical curriculum.
  • Recommends revisions and the development of clinical rotationcourse offerings for MS years 3-4.
  • Serves on CCAC and other committees related to the clinicalclerkship curriculum.
  • Identifies, recruits, and develops clinical training sites forthird and fourth year rotations.
  • In collaboration with Educational Affairs staff managers,supervises clinical education clerkship coordinators to ensure student rotation scheduling, clerkship curricular requirements, anddaily job duties have been met and provides input into annual performance evaluation.
  • Advises and oversees students in the scheduling of their thirdand fourth year rotations through the Learning Management Software(One
    45).
  • Works collaboratively with affiliated clinical sites in the utilization of shared resources, faculty and administrativeexpertise to ensure an optimal learning environment for clerkshipstudents.
  • Acts as main point of contact for students, faculty and administrators for all issues related to the clinical clerkshipcurriculum.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs, monitors and addresses academic or disciplinary problems arising with third andfourth year medical students.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs, assists inthe development and maintenance of postgraduate career planning and advising program for medical students.
  • Promotes the interests and welfare of the Office of Educational Affairs (faculty, staff, and students) while building comraderiesand collegial team dynamics.
  • Other duties as assigned.

General supervision from Senior Associate Dean of Educational Affairs.

Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Terminal degree from an accredited university.

Required Experience

Five (5) years of experience in medicine-related field or experience directly related to the stated duties.
