The Judge Mario
E. Ramirez, Jr. Juvenile Justice Center’s Juvenile Probation Officer provides professional casework, supervision and services for at risk youths to ensure efforts are made to promote the rehabilitation and protection of the community from further delinquent acts.
- Conduct intake and risk assessments of youths to determine the appropriate level of supervision and intervention programs.
- Document casework contacts, status changes, progress and problems to assure required contacts are being made.
- Disposition of youths and provision of appropriate resources necessary to meet the immediate and possible future needs of youth and their families.
- Ensure the Center is managed in accordance with the policies, procedures and standards of Hidalgo County, the Center and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of any changes in policy, procedures and standards pertaining to the Center and the Department.
- Render medical assistance to juveniles, participate in training and certification in non-violent physical restraint technique, and restrain youths as required.
- Utilize a personal vehicle to make periodic home visits and transport youths.
- Accomplish administrative requirements directed by the Center’s Administration and set the example regarding personal appearance and dress code.
- Effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, members of the general public and other groups involved in the operation of the Center.
- Read, write and assemble information and reports in a concise, clear and effective manner, using independent judgment and discretion in working with juveniles, handling emergency situations and setting priorities.
- Perform any and all other duties as assigned by the Chief Juvenile Probation Officer or his/her designee.
- Applicants must meet Juvenile Probation Officer Certification/Recertification standards as per the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
- Must have a bachelor’s degree conferred by an accredited college or university recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
- One year of full‑time case work, counseling, community or group work in a social service, community, corrections or juvenile agency dealing with offenders or disadvantaged persons; or one year of graduate study in a field approved by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department; or qualifying work experience per Texas Administrative Code Title 37 Part 11 Chapter 344.210.
- Strong organizational, management, interpersonal and technical skills.
- Must complete oral interviews.
- Current valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license and ability to be insured by the county insurance carrier.
- Meet Texas Administrative Code Title 37 Part 11 Chapter 344 and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department’s standards for certification/recertification.
