General DescriptionUnder general supervision, the Compliance Officer is responsible for conducting inspections and investigations throughout Hidalgo County to ensure that property owners adhere to city guidelines, zoning regulations, and environmental codes. The officer will actively monitor, enforce, and promote compliance with municipal ordinances, including high grasses, junk vehicles, nuisance ordinances, and unsafe buildings. This position involves performing field inspections, gathering evidence, issuing corrective actions, and educating the public on compliance regulations to ensure a safe and well‑maintained community.
Examplesof Work Performed
- Conduct regular inspections of properties within Hidalgo County to ensure compliance with codes, property maintenance standards, and County orders.
- Investigate complaints related to code violations.
- Respond to complaints, perform site inspections, and determine if code violations exist. Document findings with photographs, detailed notes, and reports.
- Issue violation notices, corrective orders, and citations as necessary for code infractions.
- Provide guidance to property owners and the public regarding compliance with code and statutes and steps to resolve violations.
- Collaborate with other county departments, external agencies, and the public to address compliance concerns.
- Accurately document inspections, violations, and enforcement actions. Prepare reports and maintain databases to track compliance status.
- Assist in preparing documentation for legal proceedings and testify in court if necessary regarding code violations and enforcement actions.
- Perform random inspections to ensure that property owners are consistently adhering to code regulations across Hidalgo County.
- Monitor ongoing compliance and ensure that corrective actions are taken after violation notices are issued.
- Perform any other related duties as may be assigned.
- Associate’s degree or two academic years from an accredited college or university in a related field.
- One (1) year of related experience may be substituted for one (1) year of education.
- One (1) year of related experience.
Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.
Must be able to be insured by the County’s insurance carrier.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of property maintenance standards.
- Ability to conduct inspections, interpret regulations, and enforce them.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively report findings, interact with the public, and testify in court if needed.
- Ability to use field inspection tools, computers, and data collection devices.
- Good judgement and ability to handle potentially challenging situations involving the public.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate records and reports.
