Clinical Fellow in Transplant Surgery, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh

Applications are welcome for the above fixed term, full / (40 hours per week) post based in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Suitable for an ST7/8 or equivalent specialty registrar or immediate post-CCT fellow who wishes to gain experience in advanced hepatobiliary surgery and multi-organ transplantation.

Duties & responsibilities:
  • Transplant and multi-organ retrieval operative activity.
  • Elective hepatobiliary surgery, multi-disciplinary meetings and clinics.
  • Transplant assessment and follow-up clinics.
  • Hepatobiliary and transplant ward rounds with responsibility for daily patient management under the supervision of the consultant team.
  • Participation in academic, clinical and audit meetings
  • Out of hours commitment to multi-organ retrieval rota and emergency transplant activity.
Key requirements:
  • General surgery training to ST7/8 level or equivalent, or immediate post CCT.
  • Significant previous training in Transplant and/or HPB surgery.
  • GMC registered medical practitioner.
  • License to practice.
  • Available to take up post.

The Edinburgh Transplant Centre provides care at a national level for Scotland through the liver, pancreas and the islet isolation and transplant program. In addition the centre is co-commissioned to provide the national kidney transplant service.

There is a 20 bedded transplant ward (which incorporates liver, renal and pancreatic transplant and islet transplantation) as well as a 12 bedded purpose built transplant and renal high dependency unit.

The specialist HPB unit acts as a regional and national referral centre for all aspects of benign and malignant HPB pathology. There are approximately 100 liver resections, 40-50 Whipple’s operations performed annually, plus additional major biliary and pancreatic procedures.

The post does not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will not be recognised for training.
