Pupil Support Assistant (fixed term until 25/06/2027)

Salary: £26,806 – £27,032 (pro-rata for part-time and sessional)
Hours:
18 per week, 39 weeks sessional
Working pattern:
Monday-Wednesday. Fixed term post commencing 10/08/2026 – 29/06/2027.
- Work collaboratively as a member of a team within all education establishments, supporting pupils with additional support needs to access education and have their care and wellbeing needs met.
- Provide flexible support and assistance in the day-to-day operation of the school, as directed by the school leadership team.
- Support pupils with social, emotional, and behavioural needs, including dysregulated behaviour.
- Ensure the ongoing health, safety and welfare of pupils, raising any child protection matters to the attention of teaching staff in line with relevant procedures.
- Work one-to-one and assist pupils with additional support needs to organise their day and follow instructions.
- Provide personal care – feeding, toileting, changing, dressing – encouraging independence and ensuring safety and comfort.
- Administer medications and complete related paperwork following agreed training procedures (e.g., pain relief, antibiotics, asthma relief, diabetes support).
- Support pupil and child mobility as defined by moving and handling training.
- Provide comfort and care for minor accidents or ailments (e.g., cuts and bruises) and report to teaching colleagues per first aid procedures.
- Follow standard risk assessment procedures when required.
- Assist teachers and pupils with learning and development activities: creativity, skills for life, planned group and individual programmes (reading interventions, one-to-one learning activities, community learning opportunities).
- Support strengths‑based, solution‑focused individual planning and review: record keeping, contributing to pupils’ learning profiles, providing relevant recorded information, attending appropriate meetings as designated by leadership team, and contributing to ongoing review of support programmes.
- Carry out support strategies advised by senior staff and visiting specialists (speech & language, inclusion and wellbeing support staff, occupational therapy).
- Support the development of positive relationships and emotional wellbeing using evidence‑based interventions with individual learners and groups (Circle, SCERTS, trauma‑informed practice).
- Support delivery of whole‑school and individual plans (positive relationships, rights‑respecting, building resilience) involving all key partners, including parents, carers and school partners.
- Assist in transition programmes for pupils moving schools (supervising and escorting pupils, assisting with allocated tasks, encouraging participation in group activities).
- Supervise pupils and support play in the playground.
- Participate in professional development opportunities, in‑service and refresher training as deemed appropriate.
This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Candidates must join the PVG Scheme or obtain a PVG Scheme update check. If an individual has spent a continuous period of three months or more abroad within the last five years, an overseas criminal record check is required. All checks must be deemed satisfactory before the unconditional offer of employment and commencement of the post.

Salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.
