Senior Mechanical Engineer – Data Centres About the role
An international engineering consultancy is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the delivery of technically complex, mission-critical data centre projects
. This role is ideal for an experienced building services engineer who enjoys leading design packages, supporting junior engineers, and working closely with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
You will play a key role in delivering high-performance mechanical systems that prioritise reliability, resilience, and operational efficiency across the full project lifecycle.
Key responsibilities- Lead the mechanical design scope on large and technically demanding data centre projects
- Deliver and review detailed mechanical designs including HVAC, chilled water systems, CRAC/CRAH units, ventilation, controls, and fire protection
- Act as a senior technical point of contact for clients, contributing to design assurance and value engineering
- Coordinate with electrical, structural, architectural, and specialist disciplines to ensure integrated design solutions
- Chair and contribute to design and project meetings
- Mentor and support junior engineers, reviewing work and providing technical guidance
- Ensure designs comply with Uptime Institute Tier standards, ASHRAE guidelines
, and applicable codes and regulations - Monitor design delivery against programme, budget, and change control requirements
- Produce high-quality reports, specifications, and technical documentation
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering
, or equivalent - Strong experience in mechanical building services design
, ideally within mission-critical environments such as data centres, healthcare, or high-tech facilities - Extensive knowledge of HVAC design and a solid understanding of controls, monitoring systems, and fire design
- Confident leading design packages on fast-paced, technically complex projects
- Familiar with tools such as Revit, AutoCAD, IES VE, and CFD software
- Strong communication skills with a collaborative, client-focused approach
- Member of a relevant professional body (e.g.
CIBSE, IMechE
), with Chartered status achieved or in progress
- Exposure to large-scale data centre and mission-critical projects
