Biomedical Engineer

Overview

Biomedical Engineers design, build and maintain medical devices, prosthetics, diagnostic equipment and bioinformatics tools. Day‑to‑day work consists of CAD modelling, finite element analysis, regulatory compliance (MDR), clinical trials support and cross‑disciplinary collaboration with clinicians, biologists and software engineers.

• Graduate Engineer (Years 0‑2): build clinical and regulatory skills.
• Engineer (Years 2‑4): run own design packages and complete IPEM/IMechE IPD.
• Chartered Biomedical Engineer (Years 4‑8): pass CEng Review and lead complex projects.
• Principal Engineer / Engineering Manager (Years 8+): set technical direction and lead teams.

Graduate biomedical engineers start at £32,000–£42,000. Pay aligns with mechanical engineering in R&D and follows NHS Agenda for Change bands in clinical engineering.

• Mechanical, electrical or chemical engineering background with a postgraduate biomedical specialisation.
