Overview
Biomedical Engineers design, build and maintain medical devices, prosthetics, diagnostic equipment and bioinformatics tools. Day‑to‑day work consists of CAD modelling, finite element analysis, regulatory compliance (MDR), clinical trials support and cross‑disciplinary collaboration with clinicians, biologists and software engineers.
Typical Roles- Design medical devices, prosthetics and diagnostic equipment
- Run regulatory compliance to MDR (Medical Device Regulation) standards
- Specialise in clinical engineering, medical device R&D, prosthetics or bioinformatics
- Work for firms such as Smith & Nephew, Res Med, NHS clinical engineering departments and major medical device companies
Most UK biomedical engineers progress towards Chartered Engineer status (CEng) through IPEM or IMechE.
Typical stages:
- Graduate Engineer (Years 0‑2): build clinical and regulatory skills.
- Engineer (Years 2‑4): run own design packages and complete IPEM/IMechE IPD.
- Chartered Biomedical Engineer (Years 4‑8): pass CEng Review and lead complex projects.
- Principal Engineer / Engineering Manager (Years 8+): set technical direction and lead teams.
Graduate biomedical engineers start at £32,000–£42,000. Pay aligns with mechanical engineering in R&D and follows NHS Agenda for Change bands in clinical engineering.
Skills & Qualifications- Mechanical, electrical or chemical engineering background with a postgraduate biomedical specialisation.
- Proficiency in CAD modelling and finite element analysis.
- Understanding of MDR and UK medical device regulatory processes.
- Strong cross‑disciplinary collaboration and communication with clinical stakeholders.
- Commitment to patient‑centred design and ethical decision‑making.

B. Braun. - Pharmaceutical R&D – AstraZeneca, GSK, Pfizer.
