Main purpose of the job

To work within multi‑disciplinary teams on major development projects, contributing technically and using your existing expertise in innovative product design and development.

Type of work undertaken by the division/group

We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills, and a broad base of industry experience, to form a powerful development team. Our work includes undertaking complete product developments from concept to market, and consulting with our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.

The Volume Products Group specialises in the design, development and transfer‑to‑manufacture of complex products serving a range of industry sectors including:

  • High volume consumer products
  • Cleantech
  • Smart metering
  • Mechatronics
  • Healthcare products
  • Industrial systems

The main areas of expertise within this multidisciplinary group are electromechanical systems design, design for manufacture, analogue & digital electronics, numerical analysis & mechanical engineering, motor & drive technologies, power electronics, industrial design and human factors, transfer-to-manufacture, manufacturer selection and support during new product introduction.

Specific responsibilities

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with the ambition and ability to achieve excellent results in a highly demanding industry and to find novel and radical solutions to new and existing problems under tough commercial and time restraints.

You will be taking the lead mechanical design role in complex and ambitious product developments, taking a design through from concept to transfer-to-manufacture. You will also have an input in planning, proposal & concept generation and liaison with clients. You will be expected to liaise with others across many engineering disciplines and be responsible for specifying, designing and executing experimental programmes with teams of scientists and technicians.

You will manage tasks within projects requiring delivery within tight timescales and budgets, managing both internal and external resources.

There are opportunities for both aspects of the role to develop into management of projects including having full responsibility for delivery to our clients.

Minimum requirements

  • An excellent first degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline
  • Direct experience of product development in the consumer product industry, including experience in the detail design of components
  • An in-depth knowledge of high volume manufacturing methods and processes.
  • A proven ability to manage a team of engineers and technicians
  • Evidence of excellence within the work you have been responsible for
  • A creative approach to problem solving and concept generation
  • Hands‑on experience of 3D CAD (preferably Pro/Engineer Wildfire and Solidworks)
  • Detailed knowledge of rapid prototyping methods

In addition, qualifications and experience in the following areas would be beneficial:

  • Track record of new product introduction in Eastern Europe and Asia, particularly in the consumer products sector
  • Manufacturer selection and support
  • Experience in DfM, design for test, and reliability engineering
  • A post‑graduate qualification with a high level of practical experience
  • An appreciation of the use of engineering analysis tools in product development including CFD and FEA
