Job Description & How to Apply Below
Location: City of Edinburgh

Our catchments are under pressure. Climate change, pollution, competing demands on water supply and wastewater treatment, and a growing public expectation that the environment be genuinely protected, not just managed, are reshaping what good water-quality consultancy looks like.

At Stantec, we have built a team that rises to that challenge. Our Water Environment Team works at the cutting edge of integrated catchment management, combining rigorous science with nature-based thinking to deliver solutions that work for the environment and the communities that depend on it. We are looking for a Senior Environmental Water Quality Consultant who wants to be part of that work, and who is ready to help shape where it goes next.

About

The Role

Ideally based in one of our Northern offices, though other locations will be considered, you will join a team with major projects across the UK and Ireland and an ambitious outlook for continued growth. Your experience will primarily sit within the water sector, with opportunities to work across energy and community development as well. You will collaborate with specialists across water and wastewater treatment, urban drainage, sustainability and environmental economics, integrating asset, land and water management to deliver outcomes that benefit both the environment and society.

Day to day, you will provide technical management and specialist input to catchment investigations and nature-based solutions across projects of all scales. You will prepare technical proposals and reports, review and check the outputs of colleagues, and coordinate both in-house and subcontracted field teams. You will build and develop client relationships, pursue new business opportunities across the UK and overseas, and mentor junior staff with the kind of hands‑on support that makes a real difference to people early in their careers.

We are particularly interested in candidates with demonstrable experience in either or both of the following: the design, coordination and delivery of monitoring programmes, including novel and emerging monitoring and remote sensing techniques; or advanced skills in data analysis, GIS, coding and environmental modelling.

You hold a relevant degree and, ideally, a postgraduate qualification, with a background in one or more of water quality, catchment science, hydrogeology, pollution management, or limnology. You have a strong understanding of relevant water environment legislation and guidance, and a proven track record of delivering evidence-led investigations in a consulting environment. Experience in developing nature-based solutions, such as wetlands, natural flood management, or soil management, would be a distinct advantage, as would expertise in one of our target sectors.

You are client‑facing and confident in that role, building trusted relationships with clients, regulators and stakeholders. You bring the organisational skills to manage projects within time and budget, the scientific imagination to find solutions others might overlook, and the collaborative instinct to make multidisciplinary teams work well together.

Your Impact

The work you lead here will contribute directly to the Government's 25-year environment plan, helping to reduce pollution, restore natural catchment systems and improve the long-term health of our inland waters. You will be recommending and delivering solutions that go beyond the engineered fix, drawing on nature‑based approaches that leave catchments in a genuinely better state.

Your influence will also be felt in the team around you. By mentoring junior colleagues and strengthening relationships across disciplines, you will help build the kind of expert, connected team that can take on the environmental challenges of the decades ahead.
