About the Role:Great British Energy is looking for a Grid Manager – Onshore Renewables to join our GBE Onshore Energy Team. This role will play a key part in contributing to projects, objectives, and wider organisational goals.
The Grid Manager is responsible for developing and executing grid connection strategies across a portfolio of onshore renewable energy projects. The role leads all aspects of grid connection activity from initial site screening through to energisation readiness, ensuring projects secure technically compliant, commercially viable and deliverable grid connections.
The postholder will manage relationships with the National Energy System Operator (NESO), Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), Transmission Owners (TOs), Independent Connection Providers (ICPs) and specialist consultants. The role will provide expert advice to project teams on grid opportunities, risks, costs and programme implications. Grid connection capability is recognised as a critical success factor for renewable energy development.
Key Responsibilities- Identify grid connection opportunities to support project origination activities.
- Assess network capacity constraints and connection opportunities.
- Maintain pipeline-wide connection register and connection risk assessments.
- Advise development teams on optimal project locations from a grid perspective.
- Support strategic decisions on connection technologies, network access and capacity allocation.
- Lead preparation and submission of grid connection applications.
- Manage connection offers through review, negotiation and acceptance.
- Coordinate responses to technical queries from network operators.
- Manage interactions with:
- NESO
- DNOs
- Transmission Owners
- Monitor milestones associated with connection agreements and securities.
- Oversee electrical feasibility and network studies.
- Manage consultants undertaking:
- Load flow analysis
- Fault level assessments
- Grid compliance studies
- Review technical designs relating to grid connections and substations.
- Support project design optimisation to improve connection viability.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Grid Code and G99 requirements.
- Work closely with:
- Project Development Managers
- Land Managers
- Environmental teams
- Energy Yield Analysts
- Provide grid input into site selection and screening exercises.
- Support planning applications with electrical and connection information.
- Provide connection cost estimates and programme assumptions for business cases.
- Support investment committee submissions and governance approvals.
- Manage grid-related development budgets.
- Review connection charging methodologies and associated costs.
- Support commercial negotiations associated with:
- Contestable works
- ICP appointments
- Connection contracts
- Assess opportunities for shared infrastructure and network optimisation.
