Location:

Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. This permanent, full‑time post offers flexibility, with part‑time or job‑share options considered.

Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a licence to practise and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway route doctors are only eligible once awarded. Non‑UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

Our aim is to make best use of available expertise in infection management for optimal patient care in Lothian. The post holder will play a significant role in the clinical infection diagnostic team at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) and Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (RHCYP), providing specialist infection advice for paediatrics and rotational service input into adult tertiary referral centres on‑site, including neurosurgery and other specialities.

Duties also include delivery of infection liaison service and antimicrobial stewardship. The position interfaces with researchers and provides services for five Scottish reference laboratories, handling Mycobacteria, STEC, Bacterial Sexually‑Transmitted Infections, Human Papilloma Virus and Viral Haemorrhagic Fever. The laboratories hold UKAS ISO 15189:2022 accreditation.

Desired qualifications include a CCT in Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, or be within 6 months at interview date of achieving this. On‑call frequency for Microbiology is currently 1 in 11 / 1 in 12 with prospective cover and a 3% availability supplement.
