About the role

Hello! I’m a wheelchair user, with a professional background in academia, third sector, government and the arts. I work full-time from home, running a social enterprise. I’m looking for someone to provide reliable, regular support for 2 hours every Tuesday after 4.00pm, or Wednesdays 10.30-5.00pm, and occasional 2-hour cover for weekend duties when needed. I need support with tasks around the house and minor personal care.

Exact times can be flexible by agreement. There may occasionally be scope for additional hours if it suits you.

Important considerations

Attitude is important. I need practical support to get on with my life. I don’t want to be "looked after" or protected. Attention to detail matters (e.g., I have limited reach, so please leave things where I can reach them). Good communication is important (e.g., if you’re unavoidably going to be late). I sometimes work with senior people in government and elsewhere, so confidentiality is essential.

Previous experience providing support to a disabled person is helpful but not essential if you’re willing to learn. It’s important that we get on well.

Safety and eligibility

I have some respiratory and other issues which mean I’m at clinical risk from Covid, so PAs should be careful about safety (e.g., wearing a mask in the house; I can supply). Please feel free to discuss any queries or concerns about this.

You will need to have, or be able to obtain, a National Insurance Number and to be or become a member of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme. This is now a requirement for all care roles in Scotland. I am happy to assist with these if necessary: PVG scheme information.

Key tasks
  • Carry out routine basic housework at my direction, e.g. wash up, cleaning, laundry, put clothes away, water plants, fill kettle, put shopping away, etc.
  • Assist with minor personal care, as required, e.g. help with compression socks, or to put a coat on.
  • Occasional shopping, collect prescriptions, post letters, etc.
  • Occasionally assist with food preparation, as required.
  • Undertake other tasks around the house – and garden if you’re up for it – as reasonably required.
  • Take all possible Covid-safety measures.
  • Possibly accompany me to in-person seminars, meetings, medical appointments (very occasional).
  • Support efficient administration related to this role, e.g. promptly check and sign timesheets, provide prompt information if you change address.
