Grade UE03: £24,729 to £25,804 per annum, pro rata (£13.55 to £14.14 per hour)

The Opportunity:

The UX Service is recruiting a Green Digital Design intern to help embed environmentally conscious, low-carbon practices into the way we design digitally across the University. Working from emerging web sustainability guidance and alongside specialist digital sustainability groups, this role will prototype and trial low-carbon design concepts with University audiences, helping to shift design perceptions and behaviours to help meet our sustainability pledges.

About the role

The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for a student to join the User Experience team as a Green Digital Design Intern.

The User Experience (UX) team are responsible for collaborating with colleagues across the University to improve user experiences of websites, systems and services (such as MyEd and Learn) for staff and students.

What the job involves:
  • Researching digital sustainability standards and good practice, and interpreting how these apply within a University context.
  • Designing and prototyping low-carbon concepts for University websites and digital products, working alongside the team.
  • Conducting research with users and University groups to test new designs and explore attitudes towards digital sustainability.
  • Applying established UX practices, including user research and accessibility, to ensure low-carbon designs meet user and business needs.
  • Writing and presenting reports and proposals to influence practice and policy, and identify opportunities to embed green digital design across University systems.
About you:
  • Current UG/PG student (or starting in September 2026) at the University of Edinburgh
  • Genuine enthusiasm for sustainability, particularly within the digital space — IT, websites and apps.
  • Willingness to explore diverse areas of digital sustainability and environmentally responsible design.
  • Skilled at distilling complex information into clear, easy-to-understand findings.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to able to present ideas to a range of stakeholders and to champion and persuade.
  • Organised and meticulous, with a proven ability to manage complex tasks from investigation through to solution.
  • Pragmatic and adaptable, comfortable adjusting approach and decision-making across different contexts.
  • Confident interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
