About us

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the independent regulator for nurses and midwives in the UK, and nursing associates in England. We play a vital role in protecting the public by promoting high professional standards, championing safety, and supporting confidence in the professions. As one of the UK’s largest healthcare regulators, our work influences millions of people every year; from the professionals we regulate, to the patients and families who rely on safe, effective, and compassionate care.

About the team and what we do

We are looking for a leader of our Legislative Change team at an exciting time, as we embark on one of the most ambitious programmes in the NMC’s history. The government is modernising health regulators’ legislation to make us more effective, efficient, and person-centred. You will lead a team working closely with the Department of Health and Social Care to secure the changes we seek and then to ensure we implement them effectively.

This work spans policy development, engagement, consultation, and embedding change.

Your role and impact

You will lead this high profile programme from end to end; stewarding the organisation through complexity, championing the opportunities across the NMC, and equipping our Board and Executive to make critical decisions.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone who can:

  • Lead with authority and vision – guiding the NMC through the most consequential change in its history.

  • Influence at the highest levels – engaging confidently with government, significant stakeholders and our senior team.

  • Bridge policy and implementation – ensuring reforms translate into improvements that deliver real benefits for the public and registrants.

  • Inspire and develop teams – motivating colleagues across disciplines and modelling the NMC’s values in a time of change.

  • Be innovative and resilient – approaching challenges with creativity, energy and adaptability

This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of regulation, influence national policy, and leave a lasting impact on how the NMC protects the public. xekaoyc We encourage you to make contact with our partners at Gatenby Sanderson for a confidential conversation about the role.

Closing date: 5pm on Monday 16 March 2026
