General Critical Care in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary are currently in a position to recruit into Band 5 vacancies. We have fantastic opportunities for Registered Nurses to join our highly dynamic, specialist unit and work alongside the multi-disciplinary team to deliver high quality Critical Care nursing. The General Critical Care Unit has 28 funded beds across 2 areas within the hospital. Patients admitted require either level 2 or level 3 care for a broad spectrum of critical illnesses.
Working in Aberdeen’s General Critical Care Unit affords the opportunity to train and work in the Hyperbaric Chamber, which is the only category 1 Hyperbaric Chamber in Scotland. We provide an elective service for a variety of conditions and a 24 hour emergency service to treat divers suffering from decompression illness.
In 2018, Aberdeen became the first Major Trauma Centre in Scotland and now plays a key role in leading the delivery of specialist trauma care. The North of Scotland Major Trauma Centre, based in Aberdeen, is one of the largest health campuses in Europe and is now part of an inclusive and collaborative Trauma Network.
Additionally, in 2020, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary General Critical Care unit was commissioned as the only Scottish ECMO centre. The ECMO service is delivered by a dedicated multi-disciplinary team of expert staff who have continued to develop the service. Aberdeen has a platinum award for ECMO service delivery, one of only 20 centres around the world to achieve this. There may be opportunity to apply for further training and development within the ECMO team for those staff that demonstrate the required academic and clinical aptitude.
A relocation allowance of up to £8,000 may be available to successful candidates.

Responsibilities- Deliver high quality Critical Care nursing within the General Critical Care Unit (level 2 or level 3 care).
- Work alongside the multidisciplinary team to support patient care and safe handovers.
- Engage with the extensive Education programme for new staff, aligned with the National Competency Framework for Registered Nurses in Adult Critical Care, and complete university-level modules as required after national competencies.
- Where appropriate, participate in the ECMO service and related training to support service delivery.
- Contribute to a learning environment and ongoing professional development.
- Possibly engage in activities within the Hyperbaric Chamber as part of the unit’s offerings.
- Registered Nurse (Band
5) with eligibility to work in the UK. - Ability to demonstrate excellent core values, strong team spirit, personal motivation, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
- Willingness to participate in the unit’s Education programme and to undertake academic modules as part of the professional development pathway.
- Relocation allowance of up to £8,000 for successful candidates.
- Informal visits to the unit are available to gain insight into the scope and practice of Critical Care.
- Opportunity to experience a 24-hour emergency service and elective services for divers with decompression illness in the Hyperbaric Chamber.
