Location: Holyrood Park and Linlithgow Peel

Working Hours: 5 days out of 7, 35 hours per week (including weekend and late working on a rota system)

Interviews: To be held in person at Holyrood Lodge on 30 September and 1 October

As a Ranger you will play a pivotal role in engaging with our visitors, communities and groups at the site. You will be a part of the Ranger team, with a focus on the learning and engagement work at Holyrood Park and Linlithgow Peel, within the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, as well as at Calanias Standing Stones. This is a physically demanding role, it requires staff willing to work outdoors for long periods of time in unpredictable, sometimes challenging weather conditions, while proactively engage with members of the public.

Key Responsibilities of this role
  • Conducting regular patrols of Holyrood Park and Linlithgow Peel, to provide a world class welcome, dealing with emergencies, providing basic first aid and summoning assistance as necessary.
  • Exercising a general duty of care for visitors, staff, over various sites, and to ensure that all the Health and Safety requirements of current policies, legislation and guidelines are followed.
  • Managing up to three staff members, including carrying out all line management activities, providing technical, management and mentoring support to the Ranger Team, and covering the duties and responsibilities of the Senior Ranger when required.
  • Leading on co-ordination of our learning and inclusion activities, engaging with our local communities, schools, corporate groups and our park user groups at our sites. Tailoring activities such as those for learning and inclusion groups (inc; those with additional support needs),
  • Leading on our Ranger Service student and work placement programme.
  • Delivering public guided walks, events and public talks as required.
  • Working with colleagues to support our volunteer programmes and volunteers undertaking a broad range of activities across our sites.
  • On occasion, taking reactive decisions around site operations and public safety without the benefit of being able to consult or seek immediate approval from direct line managers or regional heads.
  • Working with colleagues across a range of Directorates and organisations to deliver, tailored, formal and informal cultural and environmental learning programmes. In addition, supporting event and guided walk programmes, volunteer opportunities and pro-active engagement with local community groups.
  • Effectively co-ordinate and monitor assigned expenditure budgets within allocated limits, seeking efficiencies where possible.
  • Assisting with the maintenance of close links to members of the public, relevant local and regional bodies or organisations in the public, private and voluntary sector. Particular those with a special interest in learning and inclusion, as well as protecting and conserving the natural and built environment.
  • Communicating effectively with a wide range of individual, volunteers, and community groups, stakeholders and external organisations or partners. (Local Authority teams, NGO's). This will be through personal contact and meetings, print, broadcast, and electronic media.
Essential
  • A recognised qualification level in a relevant field such as heritage education, environmental education, interpretation, archaeology, history, natural science, countryside, recreation or conservation management, although consideration will be given to candidates demonstrating extensive knowledge of relevant cultural or environmental matters, event or public safety management.
  • Professional knowledge and experience of current cultural or environmental matters, as well as best practice.
  • A demonstrated track record of relevant experience.
  • Ability to plan and organise to get the best from people to achieve objectives.
  • Possession of a current full UK driving licence.
  • PVG Membership for Children and Adults.
  • Experience of co-ordinating, managing and delivering activities and projects across a range of topics with diverse audiences.
