Overview

The Specialty Care Transport Nurse utilizes the nursing process and best practices to assess, plan, evaluate, and document care of patients in out‑of‑hospital and interfacility transport environments. The nurse applies critical care principles and techniques, including basic and advanced life support, to stabilize and support patients during transport.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate and communicate with interdisciplinary team to convey diagnosis, treatment effects and results to patients and families.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships among health care teams by communicating information, responding to requests, building rapport, and participating in team problem‑solving.
  • Maintain professional knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing publications, and participating in committees or councils.
  • Delegate patient care activities while maintaining accountability and responsibility for outcomes.
  • Participate in collection, analysis, and application of performance improvement data.
  • Ensure patient safety during transport, providing basic and advanced life support measures required to stabilize critically ill patients.
  • Promote patient awareness by establishing goals, teaching patients and families about illness and treatment while in the SCTU.
  • Ensure unit readiness in mechanical reliability, supplies, equipment, cleanliness, and appearance standards.
  • Collect health history from patients, families, significant others, and health care team members.
  • Perform assessments and use critical thinking to identify biophysical, psychosocial, spiritual, environmental, and educational needs according to developmental and cultural contexts.
  • Document all data and findings in a consistent, comprehensive, and legible manner on the electronic charting system.
  • Sign required documents by shift end and participate in unit‑specific QA/QI projects.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.
  • Adhere to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications

Education,

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing.
  • Successful completion of orientation and competencies, including IABP, Impella, EVD, ventilator management.

Preferred:

  • BSN license.

Certifications

Required:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support or Trauma Nursing Core Course Certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Emergency Medical Technician Certification in New Jersey within 60 days of hire.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program within 60 days of hire.
  • Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic or Nurse certification for 911/ALS response; candidates may be trained by EMS if not holding MICP/MICN.
Compensation

Minimum rate $45.14 hourly. Base compensation may vary based on market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, geographic location, internal equity, and budget factors.
