The EMT provides Basic Life Support (BLS) services for both emergency and non‑emergency requests, ensuring safe and professional patient transport.

An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides Basic Life Support (BLS) services for both emergency and non-emergency requests assigned by dispatch authority. The EMT ensures the safe and prompt transportation of patients, works in hazardous environments, applies critical thinking skills to assess, triage, communicate, treat, and transport patients of all ages and populations. The role integrates seamlessly with police, fire, ALS and other emergency agencies.

Patient care reports are completed for each patient, and daily operational tasks support the department. Actions must comply with New Jersey regulations and HMH protocols.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to calls in a timely manner.
  • Assist and support all public safety personnel and other healthcare providers when rendering patient care.
  • Assess the patient and provide pre-hospital basic life support treatment per patient's condition. Observe and report changes in the patient's condition during care and at handoff.
  • Attend to patient needs, keeping them comfortable in all weather during transport.
  • Identify needs of the patient population served and modify care accordingly (age, culture, language, etc.).
  • Obtain essential data from the patient, family, and other sources; conduct physical examination; record and report medical information to the medical control physician.
  • Operate motor vehicles safely and professionally in compliance with laws and HMH policies.
  • Perform daily vehicle and equipment checks and walk‑around for hazards.
  • Maintain adequate fuel and fluid levels; keep vehicle interior clean.
  • Demonstrate safe use of vehicle equipment; park and secure vehicle when unattended.
  • Operate wireless communication devices to accept dispatches and obtain medical control.
  • Cooperate with the Quality Assurance program to evaluate care quality.
  • Provide complete verbal handoff when transferring care to a receiving provider.
  • Complete patient care reports in a timely manner per HMH policy.
  • Document and report all unusual events/incidents per HMH policy.
  • Maintain routine troubleshooting, maintenance and cleaning of EMS equipment, vehicles, and facilities.
  • Maintain par levels of necessary supplies and dispose of soiled linen per HMH policy.
  • Provide education within scope of EMT training as directed by leadership.
  • Maintain knowledge of HMH policies, state and federal statutes, EMT certification requirements.
  • Ensure copies of all required certifications are current; notify leadership if invalidation occurs.
  • Maintain clinical competency through required training and quality reviews.
  • Provide excellent customer service and initiate service recovery when necessary.
  • Behave per HMH Code of Conduct and Standards of Behavior.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Introduction to Incident Command System, ACS-100 or equivalent.
  • ICS‑200 Incident Command System or similar.
  • ICS‑700 national incident management system training.
  • IS‑800 National Response Framework.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace).
Preferred Education, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Two years of BLS experience; 911 experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications Required
  • Current NJ Emergency Medical Technician certification or equivalent national registry certification. Eligible non‑NJ EMTs must obtain NJ EMT certification within 6 months of hire.
