Nurse Practitioner Physician Assistant General Surgery Surgical Sub-specialty NIGHT

Overview

The General Surgery and Surgical subspecialty Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) or Physician Assistant utilizes a patient-centered coordinated care model, demonstrating competencies in leadership, direct clinical practice, consultation/collaboration, coaching/guiding, research, and ethical decision-making. The APN works collaboratively with the practice/hospital team to assess, plan, and implement care for individuals with health and safety needs.

The General surgery and surgical subspecialty Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant manages the overnight inpatient and operative needs of surgical patients in conjunction with, and under the supervision of an attending physician. The NP is responsible for the assessment and management of various patient populations which includes the overall management of the orthopedic surgical patient, ordering and interpretation of diagnostic testing, development of appropriate plans of care, therapeutic interventions.

They maintain a collaborative work environment that is safe, just, and founded on principles of high reliability and quality outcomes for patients and colleagues. The NP will perform duties in accordance with state and federal regulations as well as network policies, NP scope of practice guidelines, approved clinical privileges and the JFKUMC NP policy. The Nurse Practitioner reports to the department clinical lead and Director of Advanced Practice Providers, full time including weekends and holidays on a rotational basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of 2 years experience in the Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant role preferred.

Minimum of 5 years RN/Specialty experience.

RNFA certification.

Responsibilities

Obtains a thorough patient history that includes: determination of their health status and primary care service needs, analysis of primary symptoms, assessment of patient compliance with historical primary care treatment plan if one exists, completion of medical and social history, performing an appropriate physical examination and recognizing normal and abnormal findings, recording findings of the physical exam in a clear and concise manner using the appropriate format, connecting patient with a primary care physician based on the data gathered in the history and physical examination, counseling, educating, and instructing patients in specific disease-related and preventative medicine areas.

Communicates with assigned Primary Care physician regarding pertinent patient information including but not limited to actual or potential clinical problems, collaborates with physicians, family members, social workers, community contacts and other members of the health care team in patient care planning.

Utilizes assessment skills and collaborates with other disciplines to develop a comprehensive education plan to meet patient/family needs, incorporates diagnosis, interventions, and expected outcomes, communicates plans of care with the patient and family, and identifies the patient’s educational needs based on the assessment of the patient.

Understands their role as a professional and conducts themselves in accordance with the same, seeks out other professionals to network and create positive alliances, is committed to a positive meaningful interaction with the patients, oversees Community Outreach workers, and conducts weekly meetings to discuss patient progress, goals and issues/concerns.

Skills and Abilities

Required (Nurse Practitioner)

Graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited nursing program.

Master's or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Maintains clinical competencies through continuing education and clinical practice.

Experience in a relevant patient care setting (or as regulations dictate).

National Provider Identifier (NPI).

Prescriptive authority through CDS and DEA registration according to New Jersey state law.

Collaborative agreement with physicians on staff.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Licenses and Certifications Required (Nurse Practitioner)

NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.

Advanced Nurse Practitioner (w/ Master's Degree).

BLS AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.

Board certified by AANP or ANCC.

RNFA Licenses and Certifications.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred (Nurse Practitioner)

Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.

Successful completion of an approved physician's assistant program, accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
