Overview

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is a professional, registered nurse who is a skilled communicator, collaborator and authentic leader. The ANM supports the organization in the execution of the nursing strategic plan and priorities. The ANM actively participates in unit and hospital decision‑making and provides meaningful recognition to others. The ANM provides operational and administrative support to Nurse leadership. This position effectively coordinates staffing, supports throughput, quality and safety outcomes, staff competency, hiring, clinical and staff corrective actions, unit efficiency, quality care and other departmental activities to support the mission, vision and values of Hackensack Meridian Health.

The ANM, in collaboration with the Nurse Manager, assesses, plans, implements, monitors and evaluates nursing practice and the nursing care delivery system with direct supervision of front‑line staff.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership/Human Resource Management
    • Participate with recruitment and retention strategies.
    • Assist with unit huddles and leader rounding with employees.
    • Participate with unit goal creation reflective of hospital goals and the mission and vision of Hackensack Meridian Health.
    • Participate or lead evidence‑based practice projects or research.
    • Participate or lead unit‑based or hospital‑based shared governance committees or councils.
    • Resolve conflicts and facilitate constructive resolutions and positive outcomes.
    • Complete employee corrective action plans and counseling as necessary.
    • Adhere to HMH's Organizational and Managerial competencies and standards of behavior.
    • Prepare and conduct periodic performance evaluations for assigned staff members.
    • Contribute to and/or monitor the unit orientation process for all roles as necessary.
    • Participate with and model the importance of employee recognition.
    • Model cultural competence, social justice and fairness, and capitalize on generational diversity to foster highly effective work groups.
    • Where applicable, escalates nursing labor/management issues.
  • Financial Management
    • Participate in Payroll, Staff Scheduling and daily staffing needs.
    • Assist in managing the department budget and monitor business intelligence for the unit.
    • Maximize care efficiency and throughput.
    • Understand the relationship between value‑based purchasing, quality outcomes, revenue and reimbursement.
    • Monitor unit staffing productivity and flex staff accordingly.
  • Quality and Safety/Performance Improvement
    • Optimize the patient and family experience of care.
    • Lead multidisciplinary rounds.li>
    • Ensure unit‑based performance improvement monitoring is completed, trended and reported internally and externally.
    • Lead or participate with quality improvement projects.
    • Lead or conduct root cause analysis investigations.
    • Ensure unit regulatory compliance.
    • Participate in staff education and competency.
    • Serve as a role model and mentor new employees and new Charge RNs.
  • General Job Functions
    • Interpret, support, and communicate policies, standards and procedures.
    • Serve as a role model for staff in all aspects of nursing professionalism and quality care.
    • Assist in identifying cost containment measures by identifying alternative measures of product utilization.
    • Serve on‑call based on unit requirements.
    • Assume special projects as assigned.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.
    • Adhere to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications Required
  • A minimum of an associate in Nursing or diploma of Nursing degree.
  • BSN in progress and/or willing to acquire within three (3) years of hire. (Note this applies to team members hired on or after February 2025). Advanced masters degree in nursing programs satisfy the BSN requirement (e.g., Associates to MSN).
  • Minimum 3 years recent nursing experience in respective specialty or equivalent.
