Overview

Ability to assist in surgical operations under the supervision of Surgeons, Registered Nurses and Surgical Assistants. Assists in the organization and daily function of the operating room in accordance with established Federal, State and accreditation standards and company policies and procedures. Assists the Nurses and Surgeons in delivering the highest standard of patient care available.

Responsibilities
  • Critical Thinking – Prioritize, plan, and implement patient care within the scope of practice. Manage stress associated with prioritizing multiple tasks. Demonstrate above average organizational skills.
  • Interpersonal / Teamwork – Maintain a positive, friendly, and courteous manner. Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and staff. Work well within a team, balance team and individual responsibilities, and collaborate with other departments. Demonstrate above average oral and written communication skills and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Job Knowledge / Responsibilities – Perform duties ethically and legally within the scope of certification. Scrub all types of cases performed by the company. Anticipate surgeon needs and ensure equipment, medical gases, and supplies are readily available. Adhere to work schedules, stay organized, manage time effectively, and contribute to cost efficiency. Participate in continuing education/in-service training, staff meetings, and QA/P.I. programs.

    Help develop a healthy work environment and assist in orienting new staff as needed.
  • Knowledge of central and sterile supply, prepares and handles sterile instruments, ensures equipment works properly, labels sterile solutions, and gathers supplies for procedures. Maintains records on medications used intra-operatively, specimens retrieved, implants, and other field items. Passes instruments and sterile supplies to surgical assistants. May assist with retractors, suturing, counting sponges/needles/blades as applicable. Prepares, cares for, and disposes of specimens for laboratory analysis.

    Operates sterilizer, lights, suction, and other operating room equipment. Assists in patient transfer to PACU and with cleaning/restocking of the operating room. Assists with technical functions under supervision to carry out safe operations. Prepares, drapes, and positions patients for surgery. Prepares for cases according to surgeon’s preference cards and anticipates case needs. Requires manual dexterity, emotional stability, organization, and ability to work in the OR environment.
  • Attendance – Arrives to work area on time with minimal absences.
Education / Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years of hospital main operating room experience preferred
  • Certification as a Surgical Technician preferred
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required
  • Must be able to provide proof of identity and right to work in the United States
Language Skills / Computer Skills
  • Knowledge of Amkai Charts Database software and Microsoft Word
  • Printer, copier, telephone, and fax
Physical Demands

The employee must be able to:

  • Walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods
  • Occasionally lift/move up to 25 pounds
  • Occasionally push up to 200 pounds
  • Occasionally assist in lifting patients with help from others or assistive devices, up to 400–500 pounds
  • Occasionally bend, stoop, kneel and climb
Accident or Health Hazards
  • Regular exposure to blood and body substances
  • Potential exposure to needle sticks
Working Conditions
  • Works in well-lit and ventilated environments including operating rooms, nurse stations, procedure rooms, and related areas
  • May occasionally be exposed to outdoor environments
