Job Description

The Sonographer I performs specialized ultrasound examinations on OU Health patients to aid Providers in the diagnosis, care, treatment and surveillance of simple to complex conditions, defects and/or diseases. This position is intended for those who are gaining experience as a Sonographer or are experienced imaging professionals who wish to begin a career in Sonography. Work may be performed in an outpatient or inpatient environment across OU Health locations.

Shift

Monday-Friday 1:00pm-9:00pm with call

Essential Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision, performs diagnostic imaging on patients as ordered by a care provider.
  • Ensures testing is performed safely and with the highest quality standards, maintaining a consistent focus on patient-centric care.
  • Prepares patients for procedures and reviews clinical history to align with provider-ordered tests.
  • Responds to inquiries from patients and family members, provides clear information regarding diagnostic testing and expected result timelines.
  • Collaborates with team members across OU Health including Providers to provide exceptional patient care.
  • Utilizes a variety of highly specialized imaging and ultrasound equipment and techniques to perform diagnostic procedures in accordance with established scope of practice guidelines.
  • Conducts post-testing quality reviews to confirm that all required elements are completed, documented and align with departmental and accreditation standards.
  • Transfers images and data to the appropriate electronic health system, enters technical data/findings and prepares study for reporting by physician.
  • Performs quality control checks, cleaning, disinfecting and other equipment maintenance tasks per manufacturer instructions for use and other regulatory guidelines.
  • Ensures that technical quality of testing meets established protocols and applicable accreditation standards.
  • May administer contrast per protocol.
  • Assists with quality assurance and performance improvement tasks as requested.
  • May provide on-call clinical coverage outside regularly scheduled duty hours on weekdays, weekends and holidays as assigned.
  • May support OU Health's academic partnerships by actively engaging in teaching of students in the radiologic program.
  • May serve as a departmental preceptor to provide instruction and mentorship to new or less experienced team members.
  • Assists with onboarding of new team members.
General Responsibilities
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate from an accredited sonography or imaging/radiology program as defined by ARDMS, ARRT and/or CCI. OR Completion of JRCERT accredited Military Educational Program will be accepted in lieu if program meets certification requirements to obtain ARMDS or ARRT certification.

Experience:

  • No prior experience required.
License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association required.
  • One of the following certifications issued by ARDMS or ARRT is required within 1 year of hire:
    Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Abdomen (AB), Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN), Pediatric Sonography (PS), Registered Vascular Technologist (VT), Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer Adult Echocardiography (AE), Registered Musculoskeletal Sonographer (MSKS), American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (S).
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill in applying principles of radiologic technology, medical imaging, positioning of patients and medical ethics.
  • Applies core knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology related to sonography and radiologic technologies associated with imaging specialty credentialed to perform.
  • Demonstrates ability and skill to apply theory, practices and techniques to perform, post-process, analyze and annotate study data or procedure documentation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and patient populations served.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to apply HIPAA guidelines and standards.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete clinical or non-clinical work assignments.
  • Ability to multi-task and remain calm in stressful situations.
