Major National General Contractor | Edmonton, AB | Full-Time, Office-Based
Match Box Consulting Group is searching on behalf of a major national general contractor for a Project Accountant to join its Edmonton team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who wants to move beyond a traditional transactional role and become directly involved in the financial performance of major construction projects.
Working closely with project managers, superintendents, coordinators and the operational finance team, you will help ensure projects are billed accurately, costs are properly recorded and financial procedures are followed. You will have regular exposure to project leadership and play an important role in identifying potential risks, resolving discrepancies and keeping projects financially organized.
The role covers the full project accounting cycle, including client billing, accounts receivable, vendor and subcontractor payments, monthly close, cost accruals, cash-position reporting and project closeout. You will also review project ledgers, support internal and external audits and help ensure contractual billing requirements are understood and met.
This is not a position where you will simply process information passed down by others. You will be expected to understand what is happening on your assigned projects, ask questions when something does not look right and follow up with project teams to make sure financial items are completed accurately and on time.
Strong communication skills are therefore essential. You will be working across departments, following up with busy project managers and presenting financial information to different levels of the organization. The successful candidate will be professional, approachable and comfortable holding others accountable while maintaining strong working relationships.
The Edmonton accounting group currently includes six team members and is preparing to welcome a new Accounting Manager in July. With a strong project pipeline and continued growth across the organization, this is an opportunity to join a busy team where your work will be visible and valued.
What You BringYou have approximately three or more years of accounting experience, ideally within construction, engineering, real estate development or another project-based environment.
You understand core accounting principles and are comfortable working with client billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cost reporting, accruals and monthly close. You are able to review financial information, recognize inconsistencies and work with operational teams to resolve issues.
You are organized, detail-oriented and able to manage multiple deadlines without losing track of important follow-up items. You are also comfortable working independently and taking ownership of your assigned projects.
A CPA designation is not required. Candidates who are pursuing their CPA—or who would like to pursue it in the future—will receive support from the company.
Experience with SAP is strongly preferred. Strong Excel skills and experience with other project accounting or construction-management systems would also be valuable.
This is a full-time, five-day-per-week office-based position in Edmonton, with occasional travel to project sites or other Alberta offices as required.
Why Consider This Opportunity? You will be joining one of Canada’s established general contractors and gaining exposure to major construction projects, experienced operational leaders and a well-developed national organization.
The position offers a clear opportunity to build deeper project accounting experience and develop toward a Senior Project Accountant or broader operational finance role. You will be trusted with meaningful responsibility while working within a supportive accounting team.
The company provides a comprehensive benefits program, three weeks of vacation and four additional personal days. Vacation may be negotiable depending on the experience of the successful candidate.
For an accountant who enjoys working with people, wants to understand the business behind the numbers and is ready to take greater ownership of project financials, this is a strong next step.
