Position: Construction Manager – Infrastructure (Water & Sewer)
Location: Spruce Grove

Thompson Construction Group is currently seeking a hands-on and proactive leader to join our Infrastructure team as Construction Manager. Based in Spruce Grove, Alberta, and reporting to the Vice President, this role will focus on day-to-day field operations for land development projects, with an emphasis on water and sewer installation, underground utilities, and horizontal civil services in new subdivisions and neighborhood renewal projects.

The Construction Manager will lead field crews, support Superintendents, drive efficient execution, and resolve on-site challenges to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day field operations across multiple project sites, ensuring efficient crew deployment and productivity
  • Lead, mentor, and manage foremen, operators, labourers, and subcontractors in the field
  • Provide direct support and guidance to Site Superintendents on execution challenges, resource needs, and scheduling
  • Strategically deploy crews, equipment, and resources to optimize efficiency and meet project timelines
  • Monitor daily and weekly productivity targets, track performance metrics, and implement measures to achieve or exceed targets
  • Coordinate installation of water mains, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, and related underground utilities in land development settings
  • Monitor progress against schedules and budgets, identifying and resolving issues proactively
  • Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols, quality standards, and environmental requirements
  • Manage equipment utilization, material deliveries, and logistics on site
  • Build positive relationships with clients, inspectors, municipalities, and stakeholders through clear field communication
  • Conduct regular site inspections, toolbox talks, and crew meetings to maintain alignment and morale
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of field processes, crew training, and execution standards
  • Field Operations Support:

  • Troubleshoot and resolve emergent field problems, including technical, logistical, and interpersonal issues
  • Assist with change order identification, documentation, and implementation in the field
  • Participate in project handovers from pre-construction and provide input on constructability during planning
  • Stay current on best practices, new installation techniques, and regulatory requirements for underground infrastructure
  • Collaborate on workforce planning, crew scheduling, and equipment maintenance strategies
  • Qualifications and Skills:

  • Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent field experience)
  • Gold Seal Certification or progress toward it considered an asset
  • 8+ years of progressive field experience in civil infrastructure construction, with a strong focus on land development and underground utilities (water/sewer installation)
  • Proven track record leading crews on subdivision and neighborhood renewal projects valued between $500,000–$30 million
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to manage diverse teams, resolve conflicts, and address issues calmly and effectively
  • Technical

    Skills:

  • In-depth practical knowledge of water and sewer pipe installation methods, trenching, shoring, bedding, backfill, testing, and commissioning in land development contexts
  • Strong understanding of civil construction sequencing, grading, earthworks, and utility coordination
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and Canadian contract documents
  • Solid grasp of construction schedules, productivity tracking, and field cost control
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and field management software/tools (e.g., daily reporting apps, GPS grading systems)
  • Knowledge of safety regulations (Alberta OHS), quality assurance, and environmental best practices
