About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Mainline Excavator Operator to join construction crews working on various municipal water, sewer, road rehabilitation, and underground infrastructure projects.

Reporting to the Foreman, the Mainline Excavator Operator is an important part of the field operations team. You will work closely with the ground crew to safely and efficiently excavate trenches and prepare them for the installation of water, storm, and sanitary sewer piping, manholes, and other structures.

The successful candidate will have strong experience operating excavators in active construction environments and be comfortable working around underground utilities, traffic, and other site hazards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate mainline excavators safely and efficiently
  • Excavate and slope trenches and ditches to the required grade
  • Work closely with ground crews to safely excavate around existing utilities
  • Assist with the placement of water, storm, and sanitary sewer pipe within excavations
  • Follow directions from the ground crew regarding craning, sand and rock placement, and grading
  • Maintain accurate awareness of surrounding workers, equipment, utilities, and site conditions
  • Review utility locates and complete Ground Disturbance Permits
  • Participate in morning toolbox talks and provide input based on site conditions and experience
  • Provide leadership and safety guidance to other crew members
  • Complete daily equipment upkeep, including:
    • Greasing
    • Fueling
    • Cleaning
    • Pre- and post-trip inspections
    • Cleaning tracks
  • Follow company safety policies, procedures, Safe Work Practices, inspections, and incident reporting requirements
  • Operate equipment safely around public roadways and traffic control personnel
  • Communicate effectively with flaggers and other workers on site
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Minimum 3 years of directly related experience in the water and sewer construction industry
  • Experience with road rehabilitation, curb and gutter, asphalt breaking, and commercial construction projects
  • Strong experience operating excavators in underground construction
  • Class 5 Driver’s Licence with a clean driver’s abstract
  • CSTS 2020
  • WHMIS 2015
  • Ground Disturbance Level 2
  • Ability to safely work around existing underground utilities
  • Comfortable operating equipment on or near public roadways
  • Strong understanding of construction site safety and procedures
  • Ability to work effectively with ground crews and follow direction
  • Strong communication and situational awareness
Preferred Qualifications
  • Dozer and track loader operating experience
  • Experience with municipal water and sewer projectsl
  • Experience working around traffic control and flaggers
  • Additional heavy equipment certifications or training
Working Conditions
  • Physically demanding work requiring standing, walking, kneeling, and other physical activity when outside the equipment
  • A large portion of the workday will be spent seated while operating heavy equipment
  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions
  • Work in dusty, underground, and confined environments, including sewer systems
  • Work around active excavation sites, underground utilities, heavy equipment, and construction traffic
  • Strong focus on safety and awareness of surroundings at all times
