Teacher (Temporary) - High School Science/Math (1.0 FTE)

Parkland School Division (PSD) is a progressive school jurisdiction serving Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Fort Chipewyan, and Parkland County. PSD meets the diverse educational needs of over 12,000 rural and urban students across 23 sites, including outreach schools and alternative education programs.

Overview

Temporary full‑time (1.0 FTE) high‑school Science/Math teaching position at Memorial Composite High School in Stony Plain, Alberta. The successful candidate will teach a range of Science and Math courses at the Senior High level, with the final assignment determined by the principal.

Responsibilities
  • Work under the supervision of the Principal.
  • Teach students individually, in small groups, and in a classroom setting.
  • Support students with special needs, and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Act as a member of the Professional Learning Community.
  • Apply effective planning, instruction and assessment practices to meet every student’s learning needs.
  • Provide evidence of student learning using a wide range of assessment tools and strategies.
  • Integrate technology and a variety of teaching and learning strategies to accommodate all learners.
  • Incorporate experiential and/or inquiry‑based learning opportunities into the curriculum.
  • Maintain student behaviour and safety through the use of behavioural management strategies, including de‑escalation methods and non‑violent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Collaborate with the student‑support team to implement Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Maintain up‑to‑date records of assessments, attendance, planning, and communication with parents.
  • Create a positive learning environment and effective classroom management strategies that encourage student leadership and critical thinking.
  • Supervise students during field trips and special activities, and provide active supervision for physical activities such as gym and track.
  • Assist students at community outings, in recreation activities, and with the use of assistive technology.
  • Promote students’ personal development, including self‑esteem, routine personal care, and first‑aid readiness.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Education Degree.
  • Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.
  • Fluency in French.
  • Experience teaching French Immersion at the Middle Years level (asset).
  • Strong background in assessment and differentiation of instruction.
  • Experience with student support plans, including IEP, and familiarity with first‑hand needs.
  • Certifications in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, First Aid, and Mental Health First Aid are assets.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, sense of humour, flexibility, patience, sensitivity, and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to take direction and work independently.
  • Experience or training in Attention‑Deficit Disorder, special needs, ESL, behaviour management, crisis prevention, or food handling (asset).
Working Conditions
  • Personnel work indoors primarily; outdoor supervision when supervising students or field trips.
  • Typical schedule over ten months of the year, paid out over twelve months.
  • May be required to work weekends or holidays during field trips or special activities.
