The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta invites applications for a faculty position in Engineering Education, Communication, and AI-Enabled Learning at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. This position represents a strategic investment in advancing the future of engineering education at the University of Alberta.
The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping how engineers learn, communicate, and practice in an era of artificial intelligence, digital collaboration, and rapidly evolving societal challenges. They will contribute to teaching and scholarship at the intersection of engineering pedagogy and communication, while shaping institutional approaches to engineering education innovation, curriculum evolution, and AI-integrated learning environments.
This position offers flexibility to develop a research program in areas such as engineering rhetoric and technical communication; learning and pedagogy in the era of large language models (LLMs) and generative AI; AI-enabled tools in engineering practice and education; curriculum design and assessment in engineering; or the intersection of engineering communication with policy, regulation, sustainability, climate change, and societal impact.
We seek a collaborative scholar and educator whose work advances how engineers learn, communicate, and engage with emerging technologies.
Responsibilities
Active participation in teaching, research, and service.
Teaching (40%). Participation in teaching programs, including classroom teaching, supervision of students conducting research, and personal interactions with and advising students. The candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering communication and/or pedagogy and/or critical thinking, and lead the integration of advanced communication and pedagogy strategies across design, capstone, and graduate engineering curricula.
Research (40%). Participation in research, including preparation of creative works and reflective inquiry, disseminating results. The candidate is expected to lead an internationally visible research program in engineering education and/or communication, develop an externally-funded research program appropriate to the candidate’s disciplinary background.
Service (20%). Active engagement in service to the University, departmental, faculty, and university governance, dissemination of knowledge to the general public.
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a PhD in engineering, engineering education, rhetoric and technical communication, education, English, communication studies, science and technology studies (STS), or a closely related field. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence or strong potential in teaching and a strong scholarly record in engineering education and communication.
Experience with pedagogical innovation, educational technology, or AI applications in learning is required. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensure through the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) is an asset for candidates from engineering backgrounds; not expected of candidates from humanities or social science disciplines. Candidates from engineering backgrounds without current licensure holding CEAB-accredited or equivalent degrees are expected to pursue licensure within five years.
