Position: Teacher (Temporary) - Grade 7/8 Math/Science Grade 6 Math/ELA (English) (1.0 FTE)

Parkland School Division (PSD) is a large progressive school jurisdiction serving Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Fort Chipewyan and Parkland County. PSD meets the diverse educational needs of over 12,000 rural and urban students among 23 sites, including outreach schools and alternative education programs.

The Parkland School Division currently has a temporary full‑time (1.0 FTE) teaching position at Ecole Meridian Heights School in Stony Plain, Alberta. Successful applicants will teach in English the following subjects:
Grade 7/8 Math & Science, Grade 6 Math, and English Language Arts.

Responsibilities
  • Creating, delivering and assessing programming to support students in developing their academic, social, emotional, and personal management skills
  • Delivering programming with the goal of integrating students into a typical classroom and supporting students as they transition
  • Designing learning opportunities that meet individual students’ needs
  • Working effectively as a team member with school staff, school support team members, and community agency personnel
  • Ensuring strong supervision and monitoring processes are in place
  • Supporting families in addressing needs related to their child’s learning
  • Ensuring strong routines and consistent expectations are maintained
  • Working under the supervision of the principal
  • Working one‑on‑one, in small groups and/or in a classroom setting with students
  • Working with a particular special‑needs student or a group of students within a class or in a special program
  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Working as a member of a professional learning community
  • Applying effective planning, instruction, and assessment practices to meet the learning needs of every student
  • Providing evidence to support student learning by using a wide range of assessment tools and strategies
  • Using and integrating technology as a tool for teaching and learning for students to meet learning outcomes
  • Using a variety of teaching and learning strategies that can accommodate the learning needs of all learners
  • Integrating experiential and/or inquiry‑based learning opportunities into the curriculum
  • Continuously enabling students to develop literacy and numeracy skills
  • Providing timely feedback on student learning
  • Differentiating, modifying and adapting the program for individual students
  • Implementing an individual program plan in collaboration with the student support team
  • Applying foundational knowledge about First Nations, Métis and Inuit for the benefit of all students
  • Preparing, observing, documenting and monitoring individual student progress and behavior
  • Maintaining a safe and secure environment for both students and staff through behavioural management strategies such as de‑escalation methods and non‑violent crisis intervention techniques
  • Dealing with student behaviour and determining classroom discipline if required
  • Helping students with speech‑language difficulties as instructed by a speech pathologist
  • Updating progress on a daily basis for individual program plan purposes
  • Providing a physiotherapy program as directed
  • Modeling and practicing a speech program
  • Liaising with members of the therapy team to monitor student progress and use of assistive technology and devices
  • Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with students, staff, parents and the greater community
  • Maintaining up‑to‑date records of assessments, attendance, planning, reports and communication with parents
  • Maintaining home‑school communication using various techniques including paper agenda, Google Classroom, email and verbal conversation
  • Developing a positive learning environment in the classroom for students
  • Employing effective time‑management and classroom‑management strategies to encourage a positive environment and opportunities for student leadership
  • Collaborating with students to encourage problem‑solving, critical‑thinking skills and develop a sense of classroom community and trust
  • Supervising and assisting students in preparing for field trips and/or special activities such as swimming lessons or skating
