POSITION SUMMARY:
The English Language Instructor position entails the planning, organization, and facilitation of English lessons for newcomers, fostering linguistic and cultural integration within the community. Responsibilities include lesson planning, skillful facilitation using diverse teaching methods, continuous assessment, and feedback. The role emphasizes cultural sensitivity by incorporating cultural contexts into lessons, while also contributing to broader community integration by providing insights into local customs and resources.
This position requires a commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment that supports newcomers in developing language skills essential for successful integration.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Informal language assessment with new and existing learners to track learner needs, progress and outcomes.
- Plan and deliver language classes based on needs and interests identified by participants.
- Engage learners in a variety of listening, speaking, reading, and writing exercises, with an emphasis on speaking and understanding spoken and written English.
- Provide opportunities for learners to participate in group work – including gap‑fill activities, conversation circles, role playing activities, and listening exercises.
- Class preparation tasks including, but not limited to:
- Preparation of materials
- Registration of participants, attendance and track progress of participants for use in reporting requirements.
- Regular communication with the Program Coordinator or Manager of Programs by providing quarterly written summaries regarding lesson themes, attendance updates, success stories, challenges and suggestions on how to improve the learning experience.
Selected theme topics include:
Canadian language, culture and music; understanding the school system; learning how to communicate with health professionals; getting around – driving and/or public transit; computer and internet access – vocabulary and finding helpful information online.
