Position: Part/Full Time Assistant Italian Heritage Language Teacher
Comitato Promotore della Lingua Italiana offers flexible Italian heritage language programs ranging from 1 to 5 days per week, Monday through Friday. Classes are scheduled in the morning (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) and afternoon (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) to accommodate different family and student needs. Thursday afternoons are dedicated exclusively to older students from Kindergarten/Grade 1 through Grade 6 who already attend regular English-language schools.

The organization focuses on maintaining and developing Italian language skills and cultural connections in a supportive educational environment. Teaching takes place in small group settings that encourage engagement, communication, and community.

Role Description
The Assistant Italian Heritage Language Teacher is a contract, on-site role located in Edmonton, AB, with the possibility of part-time or full-time hours depending on program needs. The role involves supporting lead teachers in delivering Italian language instruction to heritage language learners, including younger children and older K–Grade 6 students. Day-to-day tasks include assisting with lesson delivery, managing classroom activities, preparing and organizing teaching materials, and helping adapt lessons for different age groups and language levels.

The assistant teacher contributes to a safe, inclusive, and culturally rich learning environment, providing one-on-one and small-group support as needed. The role also includes collaborating with the teaching team, communicating with families when appropriate, and participating in planning meetings and program events.

Qualifications

Candidates should possess skills in Language Teaching and Teaching, with the ability to support Italian heritage language learners of varying ages.

Candidates should possess skills in Lesson Planning and Education, including assisting in designing age-appropriate and engaging learning activities.

Candidates should possess familiarity with Literature, particularly Italian children’s literature and cultural materials, to enrich classroom content.

Strong proficiency in spoken and written Italian, and functional communication skills in English.

Experience working with children or youth in educational or community settings, preferably in language or heritage programs.

Ability to foster an inclusive, respectful, and culturally responsive classroom environment.

Organizational skills, reliability, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with a small teaching team.

Relevant post-secondary studies in Education, Languages, or a related field, or equivalent experience, are considered an asset.
